Dear Mr. Gamess:
Your request for a waiver of the required 100 feet horizontal separation from the
absorption field to private well has been approved. The approved separation distance is
90.0 feet. This waiver approval also includes an amendment to the previously approved
waiver in June 1992 of 90 feet from the well to the septic tank to 89 feet.
This waiver approval applies to the existing on-site wastewaterdisposal system to
private well separation only. Any future upgrade to the on-site wastewater disposal
system will require all separation distances be met or another approval from this
department.

Reft Waiver Request for ~ Subdivision, Lot 1, Block 2 ,-J-,, I - ~
The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The well and septic
system were installed the spring of 1983. The original well on the property was drilled on 6/6/83
and was abandoned in 1991 because of separation distance issues. The new well was supposed
to have been placed 90+ feet from the septic tank and 100+ feet from the drainfield. DHHS
issued a 90 waiver between the well and septic tank in 1991. According to the 6/8/92 HAA that
was issued, the separation distance between the well and septic tank and drainfield was 90 feet
and 100 feet.
AWWC was recently retained to obtain an HAA on the subject property. When taking our field
measurements, with a rag tape, it was easily determined that the separation distance between the
well and the trench sump was only 92 feet. If the with of the trench is taken into consideration
(36 inch wide trench), it is reasonable to assume that the trench sidewall is about 90.5 feet from
the edge of the well casing. We are requesting that a 90 feet waiver be granted.
In addition, based upon our field measurements, it appears that the closest (buried) portion of the
septic tank may be as close as 89 feet from the edge of the well casing. We are requesting that
the existing waiver be amended from 90 feet to 89 feet.
Justification for the waivers is the same as for the original waiver requested in 1991. The
following factors should also be noted:
· The ground level at the trench sump is approximately 5-8 feet lower in elevation then the
ground elevation at the well head. If the septic system was to overflow, the effluent would
not travel toward the well head.
· Attached is a copy of the drillers log for the subject well, the abandoned well, and well logs
for Lots 9 & 10, Bk 2. Bedrock was encountered between 10 and 40 feet.
· Recent water samples indicated nitrate levels of 5.52 mg/L and no bacteria. In the Spring of
1991 (typically when nitrate levels are more dilute) the nitrate level was 3.5 mg/L. In short,

although the nitrate level is moderately higher at this time, it is probably due to the seasonal
variation and not the subject encroachment.
The existing encroachment has existed for approximately 10 years. Given the shallowness of
the bedrock profile, it is reasonable to assume that the impact of the encroachment/s (nitrates
migrating through the bedrock) have been fully recognized at this time and that significant
further degradation would not be anticipated.
Based upon the aforementioned facts, it appears that there is minimal risk associated with
granting the requested waivers.
