Duffus: On 10/7/2025, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) received a submittal requesting a reduction in the separation distance requirement from a potential source of contamination and surface water for the above -referenced property. The Department has reviewed the information in accordance with Wastewater Disposal Regulations 18 AAC 72, and the above referenced waiver approval is granted. System Information The project involves installing a 3000-gallon two compartment steel septic tank with an integrated lift station, audio/visual high water level alarm, 1000 ft2 deep trench soil absorption system, and associated piping and wiring. The system will serve a four -unit residence, each with two bedrooms. Separation Distance Waiver Approval The waiver request was reviewed in accordance with 18 AAC 72.060, 72.540, and/or 72.640 in regards to potential impact on public health, public and private water systems, and the environment. Separation Distance From: Potential Contamination Source: Distance(ft): Surface Water Septic Tank 25 Based on the recommendation of a professional engineer and information provided to justify that the lesser separation distance is not a threat to public health, this waiver is approved for the following reasons: 1. The new epoxy coated 3000-gallon septic tank with interior lift pump (STEP) will be sited in the southwest area at the lowest property elevation, outside of the 100-foot protective radius from the well. 2. The system will be equipped with audio/visual high water level alarm and Float switch assemblies. 3. The soil absorption system is located more than 100 feet from the well. 4. Recent water samples collected for Nitrates were satisfactory. The Department recommends that water samples from all private wells be analyzed for bacteria contamination and nitrates by a certified laboratory on an annual basis. Approval Conditions and Limitations Site conditions and related contamination risks may change with time, therefore, the waiver for the septic tank and lift station is valid until such time that any component of the wastewater system requires modification or improvement. At that time, the must be inspected. If the septic tank and lift station is found to be leaking or requires replacement, they must be relocated to meet separation distance requirements, or a new waiver must be requested and approved prior to replacement. - - - -Future waiver approvals -are -not -guaranteed nor is the Department obligated.to approve future waiver requests proposing the same design.
