Septic system design
Dear On-Site Services Engineer:
The owner of the above lot intends to build a 4-bedroom home on the property, so we are submitting this
permit application for the construction of a new well and septic system. The attached site plan identifies
the location of the home as well as the proposed well, septic location and alternate site. No conflicts exist
between this proposed system and any other well or septic system, whether on this lot or adjacent lots.
The ground surface on the lot slopes toward the road steeply near the back of the lot, in some areas
approaching 45%. Near the front of the lot the slopes are much milder, just under 25%. It is in that flatter
area that the new septic system is located. There are no slopes greater than 25% within 50 feet downslope
of either the primary or alternate site. Contours are shown on the site plan showing the grade and
direction of flow. Stormwater drainage will not impact this septic system. The new trench will be
constructed parallel to the slope as much as possible.
A portion of this trench will need to be constructed under the driveway in order to meet all separation
distances. The standpipes will not be under the driveway and will be accessible. For freeze protection
we have specified 4” of insulation (in lieu of the standard 2” if it were just shallow bury). The trench
consists of a pipe with sewer rock beneath it; insulation, pipes, and rock all have standard use in road
construction and will not cause any structural problems for the driveway. Manufacturer’s technical
bulletin provides a minimum burial depth for 4” D3034 PVC sewer pipe as 1’. We meet that minimum
and are confident that this meets the exception in AMC 15.65.210.B.5.a.
Wells on this and adjacent lots are shown. The new system will be a minimum of 100’ from all wells
and surface water, and more than 5’ away from the septic tank. The alternate site is located more than 6’
away. Please refer to the attached test hole logs, plan and profile pages for the septic design. If this design
is followed, there will be no adverse impacts to adjacent properties.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Schiller, PE

technical Engineering Division, January 1977, pp. 33-43.
A pipe system designer uses this equation to predict
PVC pipe deflection given type of PVC pipe, burial
depth, soil density, type of traffic, type of embedments
oil, and compaction density of embedment soil. The
designer then compares the predicted deflection to
there commended maximum deflection in Table 1 to
check if the burial depth is appropriate.
Example 1: Shallow Burial
A pipe system designer is interested in using ASTM D3034
SDR 35 PVC sewer pipe in a shallow -burial installation
with the following characteristics: -1 foot burial depth:
- 120 pounds per cubic foot soil density
- H2O highway traffic
- sand embedment material
- 90% Proctor density embedment soil compaction
% DEFLECTION =
% DEFLECTION =
0.1 (P+W1) 100

0.1 (0.83 + 12.5) 100
0.149 (46) + 0.061(2,000)
% DEFLECTION = 1.0 ±1 %
The maximum predicted deflection is 2.0%, well below
the maximum recommended for PVC sewer pipe in
lable 1 O 11/2%.
Minimum Burial Depth: The minimum recommend-
ed burial depth for PVC pipes beneath a highway is
one foot. This recommendation assumes proper specifi-
cation of embedment materials and compaction, and
proper installation.
Example 2: Deep Burial
A pipe system designer is interested in using ASTM
D3034 SDR 35 PVC sewer pipe in a deep -burial instal-
lation with the following characteristics:
- 45 foot burial depth
- 120 pounds per cubic foot soil density
- H2O highway traffic (Note: Live loads are negligible for
deep burials)
- sand embedment material
- 90% Proctor density embedment soil compaction
% DEFLECTION = 0.1 (P+W') 100
0.149 (PS) + 0.061 E'
% DEFLECTION =
0.1 (37.5 + 0) 100
0.149 (46) + 0.061(2,000)
% DEFLECTION = 1.0 ±1 %
The maximum predicted deflection is 3.9%, well below
the maximum recommended for PVC sewer pipe in
Table 1 of 71/2%.
