Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for Sand Lake #2; Block 2, Lot 13 & 14
To whom it may concern:
During the layout it was noted that there is a large birch tree that is in the location of the proposed south
trench. Based upon this fact, we are requesting that your department issue a variance from drainfield to
lot line down to 5 feet. This will allow the trench to be outside this location and possibly preserve the tree.
Justification for granting this wavier is as follows:
Per MOA records, the drainfield on the lot to the north (Lot 15) is 10' from the south Lot line. In
short, our trench would not encroach upon the neighbors drainfield.
The trench for Lot 15 runs perpendicular to the lot line.
Additionally, per the initial design, we were proposing to install the drainfield below the existing field.
During the layout, the contractor exposed portions of the existing field. It was discovered that it is
approximately 1.2 feet out of level and a portion of the proposed drainfield effective would overlap with
the existing fields effective depth. It should also be noted that a seepage pit was found in addition to a
trench. We are requesting that you allow for the proposed drainfield be installed as designed, but that a
"dirt plug" be installed between the drainfields at the portions where the drainrock/s of the proposed field
and the existing fields overlap. Additionally, we are requesting that your department allow for a 4' dirt plug
where the proposed effective and existing effective would overlap that is not "in between" the two
proposed fields. Justification for granting this variance is as follows:
• Several areas of the existing drainfield have been exposed by the contractor. The bottom of the
existing system has been found to be higher than the bottom of the proposed system. In short,
they do not encroach on groundwater.
• During the excavation of the testhole, the soils were noted as an SM. In theory, this would serve
to "filter" the effluent more so than a gravel and/or GP type material.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation or waivers would have on adjacent wells or

Well to Drainfield Waiver Request
Drainfield to Lot Line Waiver request
I am writing to request a Separation Distance Waiver be issued for the existing well on Lot 15 and the
existing wastewater disposal field on lot 13/14. The lot 13/14 are in the process of having the common lot
line removed. During the preliminary survey, it was discovered that a separation issue was existing. The
request for a waiver is to resolve the separation issue and bring this into compliance. The septic system on
lot 13/14 was installed in 1982. The well on Lot 15 was drilled in 1981 and deepened in 1984. In reviewing
recent water results for COSA's on lot 15 the nitrate levels have been consistently 0.1 -no nitrates
detected, even though this situation has been extant for 39 years.
a. Waivers - Drain Field (E) to Well (E): We would like to request a waiver for separation
distance for the existing septic system on Lot 13/14 to the well located on Lot 15. The distance
between the existing drain field and well is 98.7'±.
i. DEC Criteria: The well on Lot 15 is a private well and was drilled in 1981. The data is
summarized as follows:

The ground water in this area typically flows from the northeast to the southwest. The soil
cross-sections are similar across the area and a homogenous cross-section was used to
calculate the DEC criteria for all components. As outlined under 18 AAC 80.020 and 18 AAC
72.021(a), I have calculated the following points:

b. Waiver - Drainfield to Lot Line. The clean-out at the corner of the existing drainfield was found
to be 5.4 feet from the lot line. The drainfield is a 5 -wide drainfield and the clean-out is
assumed to be in the middle of the field. We request a separation distance waiver for an
existing absorption field to the lot line to two and a half feet (25). This is an existing drain field
which was installed in 1982 and upgraded in 1984. The field has been in operation since 1984.
Granting this waiver is not likely to affect the health and safety of this lot or the surrounding
lots now or in the future.
In my opinion, this waiver request meets the above criteria for approval and does not constitute risk to
health, and a waiver to the minimum separation distance should be granted.
The proposed installation will not affect the future development of the surrounding or existing lots.

accordance with the guidelines and regulations established by the Municipality of Anchorage and industry
practices. The reported results describe the condition of the system/s on the date/s of the evaluation.
Separation distances were measured to readily identifiable features. Hidden defects or encroachments may
exist that were not identified during the evaluation. The operational life of all wells and septic systems depend
upon a variety of variables, including (but not limited to) soil conditions, groundwater levels (that may fluctuate
during the year), quality of construction (materials and workmanship), and the water usage of the family utilizing
the systems. These conditions can vary, and are outside the control of GEG. Satisfactory test results do not
guarantee future performance of the system/s; therefore, GEG makes no warranty (express or implied) regarding
the future performance of the well or septic system. GEG makes no representation whether an alternative well
or septic system can be installed on the property in the event either of the current systems fail to perform
adequately in the future. The content of this report is for the sole benefit of the person/party that retained GEG

A water sample revealed an arsenic concentration of 22.1 micrograms per liter
(ug/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum
contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 ug/L for public drinking water systems. While
private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing
health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water
