When the old tank was removed the foundation was exposed; to limit loss of foundation support below the footings it was imperative to install the new tank and backfill as quickly as practical. To excavate a hole for the new tank 5 -feet from the foundation would have required; exposing the old drainfield and having contaminated sewer rock in the excavation, positioning the backhoe over the new drainfield detrimentally compacting the drainfield, and potentially compromising the foundation below the footing due to the length of time required to excavate a new (larger) hole. The attached site plan identifies the location, size, components and calculations for the new wastewater disposal system. The design is based on a 5 -bedroom home for conservancy. The lot is served by a Class C water system with the location on the adjacent lot to the north shown on the site plan. Attached is a waiver from the ADEC for separation distances to the Class C well and other Class C wells in the area. The protective radii requested by ADEC from area wells to the new wastewater disposal system are shown on the site plan. A testhole in the area of the absorption trench revealed sandy silts with an observed percolation rate of 3 minutes per inch. No groundwater was noted in the excavation; area well logs indicate groundwater depths in excess of 250 feet in the area with no bedrock. The ground surface of the lot is relatively flat with a gradient of 3% to the south. We are proposing construction of a 36 -foot long trench, slightly in excess of the calculated required length. Due to the location of the existing failed trench we are requesting a waiver of the adjacent lot line setback of 10 feet to 7 feet. There are no conflicts with the proposed wastewater disposal field to other area wells, or on-site disposal systems. The attached report indicates insignificant nitrate levels in the well serving this lot. The system as designed will not change existing surface drainage patterns. Bragaw Anchorage, Alaska 99507 ATTN: Mr. Dan Roth On -Site Supervisor RE: Lot 6, Block 5, Sand Lake Subdivision N2, On -Site Wastewater Disposal System, Response to Comments, Waiver on Separation Distances Dear Mr. Roth: We have reviewed the attached March 13, 2007 comment from Development Services on the location of the new subsurface disposal field and have the following response. We are requesting a waiver on the MOA requirement that a subsurface disposal field not be located less than 10 feet from, or greater than 2 times the depth of an abandoned field as the location of the new field will provide effective percolation as designed. Due to the poorly planned diagonal alignment of the existing absorption trench in relation to well separation radii and lot lines, it is not practical to install a new trench in any other location than planned. The new trench has been designed to have an absorption area larger than required to mitigate any impacts from the existing trench to be abandoned. The attached Manual of Septic Tank Practice recommends a separation of 6 feet between trenches, or 9 feet pipe to pipe for absorption trenches 3 feet in width. This separation is recommended as the zone of influence (effective absorption area) extends a lateral and vertical distance from the actual trench wall, or bottom. In other words, this separation is needed for trenches in close proximity to work effectively. As shown on the attached Figures, 496 SF of the new trench absorption area of the needed 625 SF absorption area will be entirely outside of the zone of influence of the existing trench. The remaining 158 SF of absorption area will have a somewhat diminished absorption rate due to the existing trench. We would like to note that the existing trench is serving a 3 -bedroom home at this time, and is providing percolation. Therefore, the 158 SF of new trench absorption area within the zone of influence of the existing trench will provide percolation in excess of the remaining 129 SF required.
