We propose to install a 1500-gallon HDPE tank per the attached design to serve the existing 3-bedroom residence. A 1500-gallon STEP is to be installed for current functionality and future consideration or flexibility. Groundwater was noted in the MOA on-site file at 6.4’ below test hole grade and the tank may need to be anchored for buoyancy as noted. An epoxy coated steel 1500 gallon STEP tank may be required or requested to be installed. The lot and area are served by private water and any encroaching or required separations of wells, easements, existing septic absorption systems, etc. must be staked & verified prior to construction. The design will not impact any of the neighboring properties. Please contact us if you have any questions. Sincerely, Curtis Huffman, P.E. Bragaw Street P. O. Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519 Subject: Sampson Estates S/D, Block 3, Lot 11 Septic System Permit Request Ladies and Gentlemen: I am writing to request that a permit to install a new septic system be issued for this lot. The proposed systems will serve an existing three-bedroom house. Currently the lot is developed. The surrounding lots are served by private water systems, which are over 100 feet from the proposed soil absorption system. The lot is served by a private water system. The plan is to reuse the existing STEP tank that was installed in 1995 and construct a new drain field. The existing drain field will be reused. 1. Soils. The soils were investigated during May of 2007. Ground water was monitored in the test holes at a depth of 7.5 feet below ground level. Bedrock was not encountered in the test holes. The native soils have sufficient sand component as not to require a two foot (2') sand filter. It is my opinion that the overall soils appearance of the soils, an application rate of 1.2 gallons/day/square feet should be used using a standard treatment system. 2. Trench Design. a. Septic Tank Size: 1,250 gallon STEP Tank if the original tank needs replacing Pagel of 2 Page 2 of 2 3. Surface Water: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed system. The proposed systems will maintain at least 100 feet from all surface water and drainage ditches. 4. Topography: Lot I slopes to the northeast at approximately I percent based on a survey conducted in 2007. The proposed installation will be located in the northern portion of the lot, greater than 50 feet from slopes greater than 25%. The proposed installation will not affect the future development of the surrounding or existing lots. There are no wells or septic systems within 100 feet of the proposed septic location. Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 ATTN: Dan Roth Subject: Lot 11, Block 3, Sampson Estates Subd., - Sewer System Upgrade Dear Dan: Attached is a design for an upgrade to the existing sewer system on the subject lot. In April I`was asked to provide testing for a Health Authority Approval. The house had been vacant for the two months prior to my inspection. During the attempted adequacy test in April we found that the system appeared to be affected by seasonal ground water. At the request of the owner's agent, we continued to monitor the water in the lateral pipes of the system through the beginning of June. Since the house was not occupied during the monitoring period, I feel confident that the seasonal high water level was 3.50 feet below current grade. Eventually the water subsided and we conducted an adequacy test of the system. The system appears quite capable of accepting more than the required daily flow from this dwelling, and I believe that the interface between the system and the accepting soil is not clogged. As a result, it is my recommendation that we upgrade this system in place. We will remove all the existing piping in the bed, install a 4' sand filter over the old gravel and native soil, and provide a new S.T.E.P. tank and pressurized distribution system. In considering alternative sites for the upgrade I discarded the use of the northern portion of the lot; it is substantially lower than the southern half and is cut through by a large swale. The area in the southwestern corner is heavily treed and the owner is not anxious to destroy the natural cover. Should this new system fail, consideration should again be given to use of one of these sites. The location of the original soil test is appropriate for the new installation, therefore it is my intention not to conduct further soil testing. However, I do intend to verify the soils during the installation. Since the original bed was 24'x Subject: Lot 11, Block 3, Sampson Estates Subd., - Sewer System Upgrade June 15,1995 Page 2of2 44', I am requesting a waiver of the maximum width to allow us to overlay the system. There is no surface water within 100' of the proposed design. There is graded ditching along Sarah Circle and Sampson Drive. During the period of breakup, I observed water in the ditch along Sampson Drive, moving south to north. However, the ditch dried up after the normal runoff period. If after reviewing the attached design you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (907)696-6111/FAX (907)696-8111. Respectfully submitted, Kenneth M. On August 1, 1985 I installed 2 -inches of additional rigid insulation board over the effluent outfall line from the house to the septic tank and I installed same V over the entire septic seepage bed in order to decrease susceptibility to system R freeze-up. I was not happy with the septic system contractor's utilization of 1" of S poor grade (styrofoam) insulation board over an uneven surface which resulted in the styrofoam breaking and cracking during the seepage bed's backfilling process. When final grading of the backfill over the bed was complete, and proper dainage away from the house was provided, approximately 3.5 to 4.0 feet of cover remained over the top of the drain rock in the seepage bed. Realizing the condition of the styrofoam installed by the septic contractor, I opted to install another 2" of high density insulation board approximately 16" below ground surface to reduce frost penetration in the aforementioned critical areas. As far as I am aware, the septic tank has sufficient insulation and so no improvements were made to that element of the system at this time. I have attached xerox copies of photographs taken during installation of the additional rigid insulation and can provide additional documentation as required. I have also attached a copy of the well log as required by DHHS for your files. Please file the information contained herein and, if questions arise, please do not hesitate to call.
