Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 Re: Upgrade Permit for Lot 1 Block Seatum: This upgrade is required because of failure of the absorption bed that was installed in 2002. The failure may be caused by any of two factors or a combination of both: A slower infiltration rate than the one indicated by the percolation test, or shock loadings greater than the storage capacity of the bed. The absorption bed was installed in a fine grained silt/sand. The storage capacity of this bed is approximately 400 gallons, The daily design now from a 5 -bedroom residence is 750 gallons, making hydraulic overloading possible. Transportation of fine grained material to the infiltrative surface is also possible. This transportation will restrict infiltration and lead to failure. The Biotycle unit is not the cause of failure. This unit has been inspected quarterly by a BioCycle certified inspector. The proposed replacement field is a trench with a storage capacity of approximately 1200 gallons, making hydraulic overloading less likely. The trench is also located in a more grainy, sandy -gravely, material with an infiltration rate that will not change with the transport of fine grained materials to the infiltrative surface.
