Septic System Design and Permit Application
Impacts to Adjacent Properties
Dear Onsite Services Engineer
The septic tank on Lot 6, Block 1, Scimitar Subdivision No. 3 is near failure and must
be replaced. We are proposing to replace the tank with a new 1,000 -gallon steel septic
tank to serve the three-bedroom home on the lot. We are therefore requesting a
permit be issued for the construction of a new septic tank to serve the home. The
attached Site Plan and backup documentation identify the location and configuration of
the existing septic system and the location of the new tank. Also identified on the plans - -
are the existing wells on the adjacent lots. The new septic tank must be placed a
minimum of 100' from all private wells in the area. The existing tank on the lot will be
decommissioned in accordance with Municipal Code. The drainage patterns on the
property will be maintained after construction.
The ground surface on the lot slopes to the southeast at a 5% grade in the area of the
new tank. The new septic tank will be constructed near the location of the existing
septic tank and tied in to the existing service line. The tank will be constructed in
conformance with Municipal requirements.
If the tank is constructed in accordance with our design the following statements apply:
1. The tank, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on the wells in
the area or those to be constructed in the future.
2. The tank, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on existing
septic systems in the area or those to be constructed in the future.

3. The tank, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on reserve
space, either surface or subsurface, on any lots located in the area.
4. The tank, if constructed as designed, will have no adverse impact on drainage
patterns in the area. The current drainage pattern will be maintained.

The length dimension is the length(in feet) of the trench or drainfield. The
depth of a trench or pit is the distance between the surface of the ground and
the bottom of the excavation(in feet). There is no set width for trenches.
The gravel depth is the minimum depth of gravel between the outfall pipe and
the bottom of the excavation(in feet).

Permit applicant has the responsibility to inform this department during the
installation inspections of any wells adjacent to this property and the number
of residences that the well will serve.

Backfilling of any system without final inspection and approval by this department
will be subject to prosecution.
Minimum distance between a well and any on-site sewage disposal system is 100 feet
for a private well or 150 to 200 feet from a public well depending upon the type
of public well. Minimum distance from a private well to a private sewer line
is 25 feet and to a community sewer line is 75 feet. Well logs are required
and must be returned to this department within 30 days of the well completion.
Other requirements may apply. Specifications and construction diagrams are
available to insure proper installation.

Dear Mr. Smith,
As per your reply letter 11/19/90, we are applying for an after -
the -fact well permit to allow approval of previously submitted waiver.
The well is located 92' from a septic tank location. There are no other
septic containment sources within 100' of the well. The well location
will not impact neighbors' usable area as the neighbors' well is located
in proximity to our well location.

Your request for waiver of the required 100 foot separation of
a septic system to a private well has been approved. The
approved separation distance is 92 feet from the well to septic
tank.
This waiver approval applies to the existing septic system to
well separation only. Any future upgrade to either will
require all separation distances be met or another approval
from this department.

Dear Mr. Butera:
This will have reference to your request for well to septic tank
separation distance waiver dated October 25, 1990 on the
captioned lot. In your letter of request, you stated, "I
believe the original well may have been off the property and
required redrilling at the location shown." This conclusion is
probably valid for the following reasons:
1. The original well log dated October 27, 1982 shows a total
depth of 162 feet whereas you recently observed static water
level of 211 feet with a drawdown to 327 feet.
2. The well to septic tank separation was shown to be 162 feet
on the as -built drawing dated October 23, 1982.
3. During a site visit conducted by this office on November 9,
1990, a well was observed on Lot 5 which proximates the
location of the well shown on the above referenced original
as -built drawing for Lot 6.
Assuming that the well on the subject lot was redrilled at the
present well site, such was done without the required permit and
is therefore not a legally approved well. Before this office
will process the requested waiver, you must either complete the
required permitting process for the redrilled well, or provide
supporting evidence that the original well was deepened without
being relocated.
