It was composed of a concrete septic tank with a capacity of 1,000 gallons and an absorption seepage pit approximately 30' in length by 16' average width with an effective depth of 9'. This information is taken from records found in the Municipal files and completed at the time of construction in 1974. The records further indicate the pit was constructed in soil materials composed of silty gravel and visually rated with an absorption capacity of 225 square feet per bedroom. The groundwater table was not found during construction of the system. A new 1,000- gallon steel septic tank was placed by Newton Excavation, Inc. in 1989. The tank was placed without a permit and no information concerning placement of the tank is available at the Municipal archives. An as-built of the tank has been der, eloped and is included for your review. Our initial probing of the monitor tube in the absorption pit indicated a water depth of 7.58'. We then injected 514 gallons of water into the septic tank and allowed it to flow into the absorption pit. After the injection the water level in the monitor tube was measured at 8.9'. Water was then allowed to settle in the trenches over night while the system remained in service and accepting effluent generated in the house. Measurements were taken in the monitor the next day and the water level had receded to the original elevation. Based on this evidenCe we conclude the system is capable of absorbing at least 450 gallons of water in a 24-hour period and currently meets Municipal requirements for certification. The absorption trench was constructed in 1974 and has served for more than 28 years. The average life of a septic system is normally around 10 years. This system is well past that age and may be nearing the end of its useful life. The effective depth of the pit is now 84% saturated. The remaining life of the system cannot be determined due Lot 16, Block 5, Skyranch Estates January 6, 2004 Page 2 of 2 to the many factors that influence the longevity of a system. Please note that no conclusions or guarantees as to the future useful life of this septic system are made or implied as a result of our testing and inspection. The well was allowed to run freely for 4 hours and the total volume of water was measured on a regular basis. The average flow over this period was found to be 3.62 gallons per minute. During this period the static water level dropped from 171' to approximately 175'. The well is in good condition and capable of producing a sufficient amount of water to meet requirements for Municipal certification. STATEMENT OF INSPECTION BY ENGINEER As certified by my seal' affixed hereto and as of the validation date shown below, I verify that my investigation, based on procedures outlined in the Certificate of On -Site Systems Approval Guidelines for this application, shows that the on-site water supply and/or wastewater disposal system is (are) safe, functional and adequate for the number of bedrooms and type of structure indicated herein. I further verify that based on the information obtained from the Municipality of Anchorage files and from my investigation and inspection, the on-site water supply and/or wastewater disposal system is (are) in compliance with all applicable Municipal and State codes, ordinances, and regulations in effect at the time of installation. In conducting an adequacy test, I attempt to provide a thorough, conscientious engineering analysis of the system in accordance with MoA COSA guidelines and regulations. The reported results describe the performance of the system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and septic systems depend on the local soil condition, ground water levels that may fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system. These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of .this system. All systems eventually fail and satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that there are no hidden defects or encroachments. Dear Mr. Scott: Per your agents request~ we conducted a test of the sanitary sewer system on the above described property. The septic tank was pumped prior to the performance of the test on the seepage pit. During the test, the liquid level was measured before and after the addition of 1,000 gallons of water. All liquid levels were measured below the top of the standpipe and are shown in the following table: Initial Water Second 24 Hour Total Reading Added (Gallons) Reading Reading Drop 10.8 1,000 9.3 11.9 2.6 The water level rose 18.0 inches with the addition of ],000 gallons of water indicating a capacity of 55.6 gallons per inch. Twenty-four hours later, the liquid level was again measured and found to be at 11.9 feet. It had dropped 2.6 feet, or 31.2 inches. This indicates an average effluent acceptance rate of 1,735 gallons per day for the surrounding soils. If the four bedroom residence on the property is to house eight people, the average load on the system can be expected to be 600 gallons per day. We can therefore conclude that the system is disposing of effluent at an adequate rate for a four bedroom residence. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you.
