Ref. REVISED DESIGN: Proposed Welland Septic System for Lot 2, Block 1, Valhalla S/D
ADVANTEXT"'TREATMENTSYSTEM
To whom it may concern:
The proposed 3 -bedroom house will be served by a private well and septic system. We are
proposing the installation of a 1500 gallon Advantex tank, a AX -20 trickling filter pod, an
Orenco pump vault, and a 21 feet X 22 feet pressurized bed type drainfield. Comments
regarding the design are summarized as follows:
1. GENERAL: The test holes that were excavated for the initial design submitted in December
of 2001 now have groundwater near the surface, making the original design unworkable. A total
of nine (9) test holes have been excavated on Lots 1 & 2. We are proposing to install the
drainfields in the vicinity of test holes 48 & #9. On May 13, 2002 groundwater was encountered
at 5.0 & 3.0 feet below grade. The percolation rates (depth of 2.0 to 2.5 feet) were 60 minutes
per inch and 40 minutes per inch. The other test holes on Lots 1 & 2 consistently had percolation
rates of 80 minutes per inch.
2. SOILS: Attached are the logs, which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results. Given the percolation rates, the allowable application rate for
effluent from an Advantex system is 2.0 gallons per day per square foot. In order to account for
the possibility that less permeable soils may be encountered during the installation, we are
proposing to utilize an application rate of 1 gallon/day/ft'.
3. DRAINFIELD DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: 40-60 minutes/inch
b. Proposed Application Rate for Advantex Effluent: 1.0 gallons/day/ft'
c. Number of Bedrooms: 3
d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day

Ph: (907) 337-6179 • Fax: (907) 338-3246 • Website: akwwc.corn
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 450 ft=
f. Total Excavation Depth: 1.0 feet maximum (remove all organics). Provide a sand
leveling course (see detail drawings).
g. Effective Depth Below Distribution Line: 0.5 feet
h. Width: 21 feet
i. Length: 22 feet
j. Effective Absorption Area: 462 R=
4. SURFACE WATERS: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic
system.
5. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing, the area around the
proposed drainfield gently slopes (less than 101/o) from east to west.
6. LOT LINE WAIVER: The eastern edge of the drainfield will be located 5 feet from the east
lot line. This property line is also the road right-of-way for Shenandoah Road; therefore, the
proposed bed will not encroach upon any adjacent septic systems. There are not wells or septic
systems that will be adversely impacted by this encroachment.
7. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department, which would be an
improvement to the proposed design. I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation
would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at
337-6179. Thank you for your assistance.

Ref: Proposed Well and Septic System for Lot 2, Block 1, Valhalla Subdivision
(Lined Intermittent Sand Filter - ISF)
To whom it may concern:
The proposed 3 -bedroom house will be served by a private well and septic system. We are
proposing that a 1250 -gallon S.T.E.P. tank, and a lined Intermittent Sand Filter (ISF) system
with a pump station and a pressurized bed type drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the
design are summarized as follows:
1. GENERAL: Two test holes were excavated on the property to determine an area suitable for
a septic system upgrade. Due to high groundwater the only viable drainfield site was in the
vicinity of test hole #2. The reserve drainfield site will need to be on Lot 1, Valhalla S/D. A
recorded easment has been granted and a copy is submitted with this design package.
2. SOILS: Attached are the logs, which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, an
application rate of 0.5 gallons/day/tt2 should be used for the effluent from the sand filter.
3. LINED INTERMUTENT SAND FILTER (ISF) DESIGN:
a. Total Depth: As required to minimize mounding. The top of the I.S.F. liner should be
above original grade.
b. Width: 18 feet
c. Length: 20 feet
d. Air Supply: Thomas Industries, Model 5070, "Anchorage Tank".
e. Air Supply Line: "Wasteflow" emitterline, 1/2 inch I.D, "Anchorage Tank".
f. Sand Material: In accordance with M.O.A. latest standards
g. Pea Gravel: 100% passing 3/8" sieve, less than 20% passing the 1/4" sieve, and
less than 1% passing the #8 sieve.

Ph: (907) 337-6179' Fax: (907) 338-3246' Website: akwwc.com
4. DRAINFIELD DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: 80 minutes/inch
b. Allowable Application Rate of Lined ISF Effluent: 0.5 gallons/day/ft2
c. Number ofBedrooms: 3
d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 900 ft2
f. Total Depth: 1.5 to 2.0 feet maximum (remove all organics)
g. M.O.A. Approved Sand Filter: 2+ feet
h. Effective Depth Below Distribution Line: 0.5 feet
i. Width: 15 feet
j. Length: 60 feet
k. Effective Absorption Area: 900 ft2
5. SURFACE WATERS: There is no surface water within a 100 feet of the proposed septic
system upgrade.
6. TOPOGRAPIiY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing, the area around the
proposed drainfield is generally flat.
7. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES: The materials used, and the
construction practices will comply with DHHS' "Intermittent Sand Filter Design, Installation &
Maintenance Manual". The contractor should read this document prior to construction. Copies
are available at the Developmental Services Department office (4700 S. Bragraw).
8. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions
improvement to the proposed design. I am unaw

Nitrate advisory
Certificate of On -Site Systems Approval # OSC 211119
Subdivision: Valhalla B 1 lot 2
A water sample revealed a nitrate concentration of milligrams per liter (mg/Q.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum
contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 mg/L for public drinking water systems. While
private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing
health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water
from private wells. Please see the attached "Nitrate Fact Sheet" for important
information regarding nitrate.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On -Site
Systems Approval.
From Northern Testing Laboratories, Inc.
Nitrate is a negatively charged compound of nitrogen and oxygen, which is very soluble in water. Nitrate
is not readily filtered or otherwise removed in the soil and can pass rapidly into ground water wells.
SOURCE: Nitrate is a major component of fertilizer and wastewater. Often the nitrate is in the form of
ammonia or protein first, which through contact with oxygen and certain bacteria, converts to the
oxidized form known as nitrate. Sources of nitrate from wastewater include urea, ammonia cleaners,
food solids, and bacterial cells. It may also result from the breakdown of organic matter buried in the soil.
TOXICITY: Nitrate is generally not toxic to adults or children over the age of two or three years but is
associated with a potentially fatal infant disease called methemoglobinemia. In the digestive system of
young children, nitrate converts to nitrite, which can pass through the intestinal wall into the blood
stream. There it combines with the hemoglobin and interferes with the ability of the blood to carry
oxygen. For this reason, methemoglobinemia is referred to as "blue baby" disease. The EPA limits the
concentration of nitrate in public drinking water supplies to 10 mg/L. The standard has been lowered
from a previous level of 45 mg/L set by the US Public Health Service and the World Health Organization.
TREATMENT: due to its solubility in water and negative ionic charge, filtration and other common home
water treatment systems such as softening, or iron filtration does not readily remove nitrate. The best
method for limiting nitrate in well water is source control. This can include avoiding overdosing of
fertilizer near the well and maintaining good separation distances between septic tank leach fields and
the well. A special anion exchange filter that contains a media with a strong affinity for negatively charged
ions in water, or by a reverse osmosis treatment system or distillation can remove nitrate.
TESTING: Nitrate analysis is usually done by one of the several "wet chemical" methods using a
spectrophotometer to read the final color endpoint. Specific ion electrodes also can be used to detect
the activity of nitrate in water. This laboratory uses several different wet chemical methods approved
under the public water supply laboratory certification program. They also have test kits available, which
the laboratory uses to perform an inexpensive "screening test", and with which the homeowner can
monitor the change in nitrate levels from their well. They recommend comparing the test kit results
against a certified analysis from the lab occasionally to verify the accuracy of the kit. We recommend
using a specially prepared bottle that has been rinsed in hydrochloric acid for collecting samples.

Engineer's comments:
In conducting this evaluation, GEG, LtD. attempted to provide a thorough,
conscientious engineering analysis of the system in accordance with ADEC and MOA
DSD Guidelines & Regulations. The reported results described the performance of the
system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation
distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and
septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may
fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system.
These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test
results do "at guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that
there are no hidden defects or encroachments. GEG, LTO. can therefore not provide
any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the
operational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSO. The content of this report is for
the sole benefit of the owner listed above. Any reliance upon or use of this report by any
other person or party is not authorized, nor will it confer any legal right whatsoever.
