GENERAL: The existing 4 bedroom home is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system is in a state of failure and must be upgraded. A test hole was excavated south of the existing drainfield. We are proposing to design the new drainfield around the 30 foot radii of this test hole. Due to the poor receiving soils, we are proposing to use an Advantex treatment system and a dual deep trench type drainfield. 2. SOILS: See the attached log, which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 3. DRAINFIELD APPLICATION RATE: The intent is to install an Advantex Treatment System because the poor percolation rate dictates the use of an alternative technology system. The Advantex system has received class III approval and we are going to assume an application rate of 0.5 GPD/FT2. 4. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 120 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.5 gallons/day/62 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 1200 ft2 f. Total Depth: 9.5 feet (max.) g. Effective Depth: 7.0 feet h. Width: 2.5 feet i. Minimum Length: 45 feet long each (90 feet total) k. The point of contact at Anchorage Tank is Lowell McNutt. As with their standard STEP tank, it is equipped with a high water alarm per M.O.A requirements. 6. SURFACE NVATER: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic system upgrade. 7. TOPOGRAPHY: The average topography in the area of the proposed drainfields is a 15%- 20% slope running approximately east to west. In short, there are no slope concerns. 8. LOT LINE WAIVER: We request a I foot lot line waiver be granted to the south lot line. 9. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department that would be an improvement to the proposed system. The rig is owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. Drilling was supervised, the test hole logged and the initial percolation tests run by Mr. Wallace Oliver, -staff technician with Alaska Testlab. The second percolation test was run by Mark Hansen, engineer with Alaska Testlab. The test hole was placed at the approximate location shown on Figure 2. The log of.this hole is included as Table A of the report. In interpretting the log, it would be helpful to utilize the standard explanatory information contained in the back of this report. Mr. Marvin Rankin -2- November 19, 1975 After the drilling was completed, the test hole was filled with water and left overnight to saturate. On returning the next day, the hole was refilled with water and the drop in the water level carefully monitored over the next 60 minutes. The percolation rates observed in the initial 60 -minute test were rather erratic, the rate increasing with time rather than decreasing. The results of the first percolation test were inconclusive. Since the test showed erratic rates, mechanical analysis was performed to help judge the absorption capacity of the soil. Samples'of material removed from the holes were divided into two groups depending on texture and particle size. Mechanical analysis was performed on composite samples of these groups. It should be noted that these composite samples are disturbed and do not reflect stratification which'causes the soil to be more -or -less sorted in the field. Group A was silty sand and consisted of samples taken from 5 and 10 foot depths. The unified classification is SM. This soil contained significant silt lumps and also had some silt present in the sand. The grain size distribution curve • for group A is shown on the attached Cl 1. Group B was taken from the 15 �nd oot depths. This group was a fairly clean sa'with a significant number of silt lumps. Even though the sand was not highly silty, there were enough silt lumps present to cause the composite sample to be classified sandy silt on the soil triangle, and to have a unified classification of SM. The grain size distribution curves for groups A'and B are very similar, but the appearance and texture of each group are different. The sand and silt in group A are, to a degree, blended, and the soil behaves somewhat cohesively. The sand and silt in group B are distinctly separated, and the soil has a sandy, non -cohesive texture. We believe the silt lumps may be caused by alternating layers of sand, silt,'and silt-sand'mixtures in the field. Because of the silt lumping, results of the mechanical analysis were also inconclusive in predicting percolation rates. rag Mr. Marvin Rankin ka -3- November 19, 1975 On November 14th and 15th, 1975, a second percolation test ,was performed. The test was run for a two-hour duration to 'reduce the effects any erratic readings might have. The observed percolation rate was 4 min./inch. Utilizing the data contained in Table 1 "Absorption Area Requirements for Individual Residences" on page 8 of the "Manual of Septic Tank Practices" published.by the U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, & Welfare, the absorption area requirements for a seepage pit or absorption bed placed in the soils of this lot is 115 square ft. per bedroom. Due to the layering of sand and silt and the presence of silt lumps in much of the sand, we would recommend the use of a slightly higher design value of 140 to 150 -- say .145 square feet per bedroom. On the date of exploration no water table was detected in the test hole. It should be noted, however, that the water table normally fluctuates with precipitation and and with the seasons. Attached is a site plan showing the adjacent properties, general site topography and approximate location of wells and on-site soil absorption system on each lot. Lot 9 is approximately t/: acre. The eastern half of the lot (on the Shiloh side) is relatively level. From this point the lot slopes sharply off to a lower area on the western side. The well is situated approximately 20 feet off the property line against Shiloh. The seepage trench is located toward the flatter area on the western side of the lot. The soil absorption system was installed in 1969. The original septic tank is located 88 feet from the well and met the separation requirements at the time of installation. The sewer systems and wells on either side of Lot 9 are similarly situated. The exact date of drilling the well is unknown; we found that it is cased to over 40 feet and that the static water level was 34.5 feet below ground level. Well logs for Lot 8, 9, and 10 cannot be found in the records maintained by your office. It is assumed that the well were drilled by the same company during the same time frame. A soils log is not present for Lot 9. A soil log was found for Lot 10 performed in 1985. The soils on Lot 10 were logged to be silty sands and gravels to sandy gravel to a depth of 15 feet. No water was encountered in this test hole. It can be assumed that the soils are similar on Lot 9. Measurements were taken and both a well flow and a sewer adequacy test were performed. During the course of the inspection we found that the second septic tank (500 gallons), is less than 100 feet from the well. The actual measured distance from the first clean out on this tank to the well is 97.4 feet. We are therefore requesting a waiver to 96 feet. This lot is approximately 1/2 acre. The eastern half of the lot (on the Shiloh side) is relatively level. From this point the lot slopes sharply off to a lower area on the western side. The well is situated approximately 20 feet off the property line against Shiloh. The seepage trench is located toward the flatter area on the western side of the lot. The sewer systems and wells on either side of Lot 9 are similarly situated. The exact date of drilling the well is unknown; we found that it is cased to over 40 feet and that the static water level was 34.5 feet below ground level. The total coliform test is negative and the nitrate level is 0.94 mg/liter. The original sewer system was installed in 1969; the original septic tank is 88 feet from the well and met the requirements at the time of its installation. Subsequently in 1975 the house was upgraded to a four bedroom and both a new 500 gallon tank and a new trench were installed. The soil rating used for the upgrade installation was 145 square feet/bedroom. There was an upgrade on this system in 1975 where an additional 500 gallon tank was installed in 1975 which was inspected by D.H.E.P. At that time it appears that your inspector did not think it prudent to move the old tank and thus left it intact. In light of the above, it seems fair that the system should be left as is since the system is working properly and no new construction is required at this time.
