Septic System and Well Permit Request
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am writing to request a permit to install an initial septic system and private well be issued for this
property. The proposed systems will serve an existing three (3) bedroom house. Currently there are no
existing systems. An absorption field will be installed and a reserve field area is designated. This lot will be
served by the proposed private well. The surrounding lots are also served by private wells. There are no
wells within 200' of this system.
Soils. Spurkland Engineering performed one test hole on this lot in September of 2014, and groundwater
was monitored for at least seven days. The test hole monitor tube was dry after the seven day monitoring
period. It is my opinion, based on the results of the soils tests and overall soils appearance; an application
rate of 1.2 gallon/day/square feet should be used for a conventional wastewater system.
1. Soil Absorption System Design.
a. See Sheet 2 of the design package.
2. Surface Water: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic tank and drain
field. The proposed drain field upgrade will maintain at least 100 feet from all surface water and drainage
ditches.
3. Topography: The proposed drain field is located on the northern portion of the lot. The
surrounding topography generally slopes from southwest to northeast at approximately 50% until the
existing structure. The terrain then levels to a 10% slope towards the road to the north. There is a steep
slopes within 50 feet of the proposed drain field (see waivers).
4. Waivers: We are requesting an absorption field to slope waiver of thirty-five feet (35') (See Sheet 2
of the design package.

The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design narrative in support of our application for
a permit to install a vault privy on Lot 7, Block 4, Raven Mountain Estates, Unit #1, located on Crow
Creek Road in Girdwood. A site plan, design drawings and specifications are enclosed for your review.
The owner of this lot is in the process of applying for a land use permit allowing use of a teepee
structure on this lot. After consultation with Jim Cross he has elected to install a vault privy to avoid the
disturbance associated with test hole excavation, as well as to save the cost of the soils analysis. He is
aware that this permit will not allow him to drill a well on this lot and he plans to utilize water
transported in plastic jugs for eating, drinking and washing. The owner is also aware that his gray water
will have to be collected and disposed of properly off-site.
As indicated on the site plan, the topography of much of the lot slopes steeply down towards the
north and east; however the area where the vault privy will be installed is on a relatively level bench
with much gentler slopes leading down to Crow Creek Road. There are no wells or septic systems or
surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed vault privy.
The proposed project will have no significant impact on present or future water supply and
wastewater disposal systems serving adjacent properties, nor will it have any significant impact on
reserved space -surface and subsurface, or on drainage.

Specifications
1.0 General:
1.1 The scope of the project consists of installation of a vault privy utilizing an approved 500 -gallon
septic tank to contain excreta, which will then be pumped and transported to an approved disposal
facility.
1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor
deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspection.
All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform to Municipal and State
requirements. All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless
specifically waived.
2.0 Vault Privy Tank
2.1 The new 500 -gallon single -compartment septic tank shall be Municipally approved and have a
bituminous coating. The manhole shall be fitted with a waterproof manhole riser extending to just
below the level of the seat in the privy. An uncapped vent pipe made of ASTM D-3034 PVC shall be
plumbed into the side of the manhole riser and from there extended up through the roof of the privy
structure.
2.2 The aboveground privy structure shall be fabricated to the owner's design in accordance with
all of the requirements of the latest edition of the Sanitarian's Handbook or as illustrated on the
Municipal handout.
3.0 Inspection:
3.1 One (1) engineering inspection will be necessary after the privy is constructed to document
conformance with these specifications and Municipal requirements. The owner shall provide a receipt
documenting that the tank is an approved coated septic tank.
