Excavating work for the septic system at 19300 Silverwood Hill Drive was completed using
an Hitachi EX100 owned by me and operated exclusively by me, Neil Nichols, owner of the
home at said address. In accordance with ADEC's Approved Homeowner's Program, I was
present and directly involved with this project at all phases. The only other people
working on the design and construction of this septic system for my personal home are
professional engineer Steve Eng and Municipal inspectors.

2. All requirements specified in Anchorage Municipal code Chapters 15.55 and 15.65 and the State of Alaska Wastewater

B. Covered, sealed, and heated to prevent freezing.

The entire subsurface disposal field and/or alternate is not within a 30 foot radius of a percolation

An existing house has completed 5 test holes in order to design a conventional septic system. A
previous permit was issued, but expired in 2008. The test holes exhibit silty gravel soil to I F
depth, and no groundwater. The design calls for a new trench & septic tank. Private water wells
serve the area lots. An existing water well is already drilled and location shown on drawing.
Please review the wastewater system design for the single family home. I have included design
plans & specs, design guidelines, & soil tests. If there is need for additional information or
clarification please give me a call.

This is in reply to your 10/6/11 comments:
1. A 10 -foot separation exists between the fields. Distance noted on drawing.
2. Well log, pump install log, & water sample results will be submitted with inspection report.
3. The Arcterra test hole was attempted to be located on the drawing based on MOA files. We
performed 7 test holes on the site and found the refusal depth to vary. Refusal depth was not
on solid bedrock, but rather fractured boulders/cobbles. Refusal depth can vary on this site
and also could vary with equipment operators. The crest of the hill had the best soil depth.
One of our test holes behind the crest was excavated to 14- foot depth.
4. Additional topographic information has been included. The site above the septic system is
level. Below the system the ground slopes at 15%.
5. An additional perk test will be completed during construction and submitted with inspection
report.
6. A foundation cleanout has been added.
7. A note was added to install cleanouts for the sewer service line to the tank.

SPECIFICATIONS & DESIGN GUIDELINES
Wastewater System Sizing: This is an existing 5 -bedroom, single family home. This is
a new subdivision and most of the neighboring lots are undeveloped. These lots are very
large and are served by private water wells. No adverse impacts are expected from
development. No conflicts to the other lots will take place by this septic system and water
well construction. The easements are located on the drawing and are not encroached
upon. Soil tests revealed silty gravel soil. An application rate of 0.8 GPD/FTI with 0.5
reduction factor for utilizing a 5' wide trench. Trench Length = 937.5 FTI/5'x .5
reduction factor = 94'; 1 line @ 94'. Excavation became difficult at 11'- 14', although
hard bedrock had not yet been encountered. Monitoring revealed no groundwater.
Specification Requirements: All components and work must comply with the
Municipality of Anchorage Specifications (AMC) & State of Alaska Drinking Water
Regulations and Wastewater Regulations.
• Two compartment, 1500 gallon septic tank. Watertight couplings on inlet & outlet.
5' minimum between the tank and bed. 10' to property lines.
• 3' of cover or insulation is required for trench; an equivalent of 1" insulation for
l' foot soil cover.
• Tank & solid pipe must be set on well compacted, stable soil.
• 4 inch diameter cleanouts with airtight caps are required 1' to 4' from foundation
wall, prior to any 90 degree bend in 4 inch line, in each tank compartment, and two
adjacent opposing cleanouts between the tank and the absorption field, not more than
10' from the tank positioned to provide cleanout access towards the tank and towards
the absorption field.
• All cleanouts must extend to at least ground level.
• In solid pipe runs, ASTM D-3034 may be used in lieu of cast iron.
• Trench to be placed level, minimum of 4' to groundwater, 6' to bedrock from drain -
rock.
• Drain rock to be 'h inch to 2 `/I inch screened. Drain rock to be distributed uniformly
throughout the trench.
• Perforated pipe to be installed level with perforations down.
Silt barrier (filter fabric) to be installed above the drain rock.
• Smeared trench sides must be raked or scarified before drain rock placement.
• The finish grade must be mounded to promote drainage over the trench.
• Insulation must be placed over any pipe installed under driveways or parking areas.
• Approved pipe materials include cast iron, PVC ASTM D3034, PVC ASTM F789,
ABS ASTM D2661,
• Sewer Service Line is minimum 2% slope.
Septic Tank to be pumped every two years or when required.
• Insulation board to be extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Styrofoam HI/equal)
DESIGN NOTES:
1. Total Depth of Trench is 5'.

Subject: New Sewer Permit — Silverwood Hill Estate, Lot 1
Gentlemen:
The owner has requested we proceed forward to obtain a septic permit on the subject
lot. On June 15, 2001 one testhole was performed for the proposed system. The results
of this test are attached. The general slope of the proposed septic area is from north to
south at a grade of approximately 5-20%.
We have designed our system utilizing the existing testhole that were excavated for the
proposed 4 -bedroom house. The lot will be served by an individual well. We propose
to install two 5' wide mound trenches. Water was not encountered during the
excavation or during monitoring.
There are no public or private wells within 200' of our proposed system location except
as noted. There is no surface water within 100' of the proposed system and there are no
known curtain drains within 50'. We do not expect there to be any adverse effect on
adjacent lots by the development of this system.
