Ref: Waiver Request from Drainfield to AWWU Water Main
To whom it may concern:
The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a public water and a private septic system. It recently came
to our attention when reviewing AWWU record drawings that the drainfield that was installed in 2005
has a separation distance of 7 feet from the drainfield to the edge of the water main, and not 10 feet as
previously documented. Attached is the AWWU record drawing and our drawing showing the
encroachment. We are requesting a 7 foot waiver be issued for the existing encroachment. The
following are justifications for the encroachment;
• The encroachment has existed for almost 10 years with no known adverse impacts.
• The water main is owned by AWWU and the pressure inside the line is always above 20 PSI.
It is rare for an AWWU water main to lose pressure.
• The soil below the drainfield perked at less than 1 minute/inch. So the drainfield is underlain
with a 2 foot sand filter. This sand filter will/has served to protect the underlying soils/aquifer.
• The porus sand filter and in-situ soil allows for rapid downward movement of the effluent and
limited lateral movement.
• The gradient in this area is to the northwest which should result in subsurface water migrating
from the main towards the drainfield.
• The drainfield was last tested on 3/1/12 and the performance/condition was excellent.

Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Eagle River Valley Ranchettes Subdivision; Lot 27B,
To whom it may concern:
The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a public water and a private septic system. The septic system
is currently in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. We arc proposing to install a new 1250 gallon
S.T.E.P. tank and a bed type drainfield with a 2 foot sand filter. One test hole was excavated on the
property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. We are asking that
the distance between the proposed drainfield and existing drainfield, which will be abandoned, be waived
to 5 feet. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the
percolation test results.
2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications.
3. SURFACE NVATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the average topography in the area
of the proposed drainfield is fairly flat. In short, there are no slope concerns.
We are unaware qqny adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems.

The Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department (DSD) Issues Certificates of On -Site Systems
Approval (COSA) based only upon the representations given in paragraph 4 by an independent professional civil
engineer registered in the State of Alaska. Certificates of On -Site Systems Approval are required for the transfer
of title (except between spouses) for properties served by a single-family on-site wastewater disposal and/or
water supply system. DSD also issues COSAs upon request to homeowners. Certificates of On -Site Systems
Approval are valid for 90 days from the date of issue for properties served by a private or Class C well and may
be reissued with new water samples. (Certificates may be reissued for a period of up to one year with valid water
samples.) Certificates are valid for one year for properties served by Class A or B wells or a public water system.
The Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions in the professional engineer's work.

in conducting this evaluation, GEG, UD. attempted to provide a thorough,
conscientious engineering analysis of the system in accordance with ADEC and MOA
DSD Guidelines & Regulations. The reported results described the performance of the
system under the conditions encountered at the time of the. test and separation
distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and
septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may
fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family, being served by the system.
These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test
results do not guarantee future performance of the system; nor do they guarantee that
there are no hidden defects or encroachments. GEG, LTD. can therefore not provide
any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the
operational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSD. The content of this report is for
the sole benefit of the owner listed above. Any reliance upon or use of this report by any
other person or party is not authorized, nor will it confer any legal right whatsoever.

At the request of Totem Realty, a sewer system adequacy test was
performed on the system located on the referenced property.
The septic tank wns pumped and verified to have a capacity of 1000
gallons. The absorption trench wns tested by a continuous flow of
water over a period of 48 hours. The average flow for a 24 hour
period was 636 gallons.
It can be concluded from this test that the septic tank and nbsorntion
trench is currently adequate for your three bedroom home.
