Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade Design for Lot 6; Kimpton Subdivision
To whom it may concern:
The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system
consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank and a deep trench type drainfield. The drainfield is
surcharged and the septic system must be upgraded for the sale of the house. A test hole was
excavated east of the existing septic system. The new septic system will be designed around the
30 foot radius of this test hole. We are proposing that a new 1000 gallon septic tank and dual five
foot wide drainfields be installed. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results.
2. TRENCH DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: 5.5 minutes/inch
b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.8 gallons/day/ft2
c. Number of Bedrooms: 3
d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 563 n2
f. Total Depth: 8.0 feet (maximum)
g. Effective Depth: 4 feet
h. Width: 5 feet
i. Reduction Factor: 0.50
j. Minimum Length: 60 feet total length (2 @ 30 feet long each)
k Effective absorption area = 600 R2
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed upgrade.

4. TOPOGRAPHY: The area for the septic upgrade is a 5f percent slope running from
approximately east to west; in short, there are no slope concerns.

18 AAC 72.060. PLAN REVIEW. (a) No person may construct, alter, or 1
modify a sewerage system or treatment works or any part of one until detailed
engineering reports, plans, and specifications are submitted to the
department and approved by the department in writing. The department will,
in its discretion, waive this requirement for sewage treatment and disposal
on individual residential or recreational lots.
(b) The engineering reports, plans and specifications shall be certified
by a professional engineer registered in the State of Alaska in accordance
with AS 08.48.221.
(c) The department will, in its discretion, require that the.designs
for sewerage systems and treatment works in remote areas have a history of
successful operation in crnparable environmental situations. Sewerage
systems or treatment works also must be designed to successfully operate
under the conditions of seasonal frost or perennial frost encountered in the
areas where the construction is proposed.
(d) If any construction or other activity is intended which might
render water of the state inaccessible or uninhabitable for spawning or
propa-ation of salmon, or cause violations of the Water Quality Standards
in c};.,pter 70 of this title, the required submission of plans shail contain the
following information:
(1) a detailed description of and timetable for the proposed
construction or other activity; and
(2) other information the department requires to fully assess
the impact of the proposed activity upon the waters.
(e) The department will, within 30 days of receipt of complete plans,
approve plans sutrnitted under this section if the applicant demonstrates
that the sewerage system or treatment works will meet the requirements of
this chapter and chapter 70 of this title.
(f) The department will, in its discretion, attach terms and conditions
to approved plans necessary to insure compliance with the requirements of
this chapter and chapter 70 of this title.
(g) For the purpose of reviewing plans required to be sulinitted under
this section, the department will use, where applicable, the design criteria
contained in the following:
(1) Sewage Treatment Plant Design, Manual of Practice Number 8,
1976, and Design and Construction of Sanitary and Storm Sewers, Manual of
Practice Number 0—,1-970; Water Pollution Control Federation, 3900 Wisconsin
Avenue, Washington, D.C., 20016.
(2) Glossary - Water and Wastewater Control Engineering, Joint
Editorial Board, American Public Health Association, American Society of Civil
Engineers, American Water Fbrks Association and Water Pollution Control

The Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department (DSD) Issues Certificates of Health Authority
Approval (HAA) based only upon the representations given in paragraph 4 by an independent professional civil
engineer registered in the State of Alaska. Certificates of Health Authority Approval are required for the transfer of
title (except between spouses) for properties served by a single-family on-site wastewater disposal and/or water
supply system. DSD also issues HAAs upon request to homeowners. Certificates of Health Authority Approval are
valid for 90 days from the date of issue for properties served by a private or Class C well and may be reissued with
new water sample results. (Certificates may be reissued for a period of up to one year with valid water samples.)
Certificates are valid for one year for properties served by Class A or B wells or a public water system. The
Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions in the professional engineer's work.

COMMENTS: The SAS consists of 2 parallel "S Wide" Shallow Trenches with a 4'ED. Prior to beginning the test
there was 4.6' of measurable liquid In one trench and none In the other. With the addition of 660 gallons to the
system (more than the design dairy flow) the levels rose to 6.0' In the one that had measurable liquid and 0.3'
In the other, Indicating that the one hsnch was lacking up and overflowing to the other. A recovery measurement
an hour after stopping the flow, showed that the level had dropped to 6.9' in the "failed" trench and to 0.0' in the
other. As a "total" system, the SAS adequately absorbed the flow.

The Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department (DSD) Issues Certificates of Health Authority
Approval (HAA) based only upon the representations given in paragraph 4 by an independent professional civil
engineer registered in the State of Alaska. Certificates of Health Authority Approval are required for the transfer
of title (except between spouses) for properties served by a single-family on-site wastewater disposal and/or
water supply system. DSD also issues HAAs upon request to homeowners. Certificates of Health Authority
Approval are valid for 90 days from the date of issue for properties served by a private or Class C well and may
be reissued with new water samples. (Certificates may be reissued for a period of up to one year with valid
water samples.) Certificates are valid for one year for properties served by Class A or B wells or a public water
system. The Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions in the professional engineer's
work.
Note: Alaska Water and Wastewater Consultants, Inc. shall be paid 3 at, or prior
to closing for the engineering services provided.

Investigation, based on procedures outlined in the Health Authority Approval Guidelines for this application,
shows that the on-site water supply and/or wastewater disposal system Is(are) safe, functional and adequate
for the number of bedrooms and type of structure indicated herein. I further verify that based on the
information obtained from the Municipality ofAnchorage riles and from my investigation and inspection, the
on-site water supply and/or wastewater disposal system is(are) in compliance with all applicable Municipal
and State codes, ordinances, and regulations in effect at the time of installation.

In conducting this evaluation, AKW WC, Inc. attempted to provide a thorough,
conscientious engineering analysis of the system in accordance with ADEC and MOA
DSD Guidelines & Regulations. The reported results described the performance of the
system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation
distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and
septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may
fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system.
These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test
results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that
there are no hidden defects or encroachments. AKW WC, Inc. can therefore not provide
any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the
operational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSD. The content of this report is for
the sole benefit of the owner listed above. Any reliance upon or use of this report by any
other person or party is not authorized, nor will It confer any legal right whatsoever.
