Ref: Septic Upgrade Design for Lot 22, Block 2, Prospect Heights Subdivision Addn. #1
To whom it may concern:
The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private septic system and a private well. The existing
seepage trench failed an adequacy test and must be upgraded prior to the sale of the house. A test
hole was excavated to the northwest of the existing septic system. Comments regarding the
proposed upgrade design are summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: Attached is the log which shows the soil profile, and the percolation test result. The
soils below th organics is a ML material to a depth of 3 feet and than transitions to a SW/GW
material to a depth of 9 feet. At 9 feet, the soils transition to a SP/SW material to a depth of 14
feet (bottom of test hole). A percolation test was performed at 5.0 to 5.5 feet which perked out at
a rate of <1 minute/inch. No groundwater was encountered during excavation of the test hole.
The insuti soils at 9 feet will act as a sand filter.
2. TRENCH DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: <1 minutes/mch
b. Allowable Application Rate: 1.2 gallons/day/ft2
c. Number of Bedrooms: 3
d. Design Flow: 450 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 375 ft2
f. Effective Depth: 4 feet
g. Reduction Factor = 0.50
h. Width: 5 feet (minimum)
i. Minimum Length: 40 feet
j. Effective absorption area = 400 ft2 (375 ft2 OK)
k. Maximum depth = 7 feet (on uphill side of trench)
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed
upgrade.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography site plan, the lot runs from
approximately east/southeast to west/northwest at a grade of 5-10 percent. In short, there are no
slope concerns.
I am unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic

In conducting this evaluation, AKW WC, Inc. attempted to provide a thorough,
conscientious engineering analysis of the system In accordance with ADEC and MOA
DSD Guidelines 6 Regulations. The reported results described the performance of the
system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation
distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and
septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may
fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the fam#y being served by the system.
These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test
results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that
there are no hidden defects or encroachments. AKWWC, Inc. can therefore not provide
any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the
operational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSD. The content of this report is for

During a recent Health Authority Approval on-site inspection and test of the
potable water supply well on Block 2, Lot 22 of Prospect Heights #1
subdivision, the well's productivity was determined to be 0.42 gallons per
minute. The minimum well productivity required by this Department (AMC
15.55) for a 3 -bedroom residence is 0.31 gallons per minute. Although the
subject well currently exceeds this minimum requirement, all parties
concerned are advised that the production capacity of the well may fluctuate.
Restriction of non-critical water uses such as washing cars and watering
lawns and gardens may be required.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Health Authority
Approval.

During a recent Health Authority Approval on-site inspection
and test of the potable water supply well on Lot
Block _� of PI O!SPE'e�T &6JP ZWSubdivision, the well's
productivity was determined to be 0,44 gallons per minute.
The minimum well productivity required by this Department
(AMC 15.55) for a 3 bedroom residence is0 .31 gallons
per minute. Although the subject well currently exceeds this
minimum requirement, all parties concerned are advised that the
production capacity of the well may fluctuate. Restriction
of non-critical water uses such as washing cars and watering
lawns and gardens may be required.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject
Health Authority Approval.

Dear Sirs:
By means of this letter we are requesting issuance of a waiver allowing the septic tank on Lot 22,
Block 2, Prospect Heights S/D, Addn. #1, located at 9401 Slalom Drive, to be 93 feet from the well on the
same lot instead of the normally required 100 feet. We are also requesting a waiver allowing the soil
absorption trench on the same lot to be 3 feet from the property line common with Lot 21. A site plan,
HAA application, and other relevant backup documents are enclosed for your review.
According to the driller's log the well was completed in June of 1982 and has a total depth of 325 feet
and a yield of 50 gph. On May 18, 1993 the static water level stood at 40 feet below the top of the casing.
Steady pumping of 374 gallons of water from the well at an average pump rate of 8.5 gpm caused the
water level inside the casing to be drawn down to the pump intake at 315 feet. We then measured the
actual well yield to be 0.8 gpm over two subsequent recovery and drawdown cycles. Water samples
collected on May 13 were satisfactory, with no reported coliform or other bacteria per 100 ml., and 0.76
mg/1 of nitrate -N.
The wastewater disposal system was installed in November of 1982 and consists of a 1250 gallon
septic tank followed by 36 lineal feet of soil absorption trench with 4 feet of sewer gavel beneath the
distribution pipe. According to the as -built inspection report the septic tank is 103 feet from the well and
the trench is 11 feet from the property line. Our measurements indicate that the septic tank cleanout is
actually 94.6 feet from the well; the waiver request of 93 feet is to allow for underground projection of the
tank. When we plotted the location of the cleanouts on an as -built survey of the lot, it appears that the
monitor tube at the end of the trench is only 3 or 4 feet from the lot line. Thus, we are requesting a lot line
waiver down to 3 feet in addition to the well -septic tank waiver.
On May 18 - 21, 1993 we conducted an adequacy test of the wastewater disposal system. The initial
fluid depth in the septic tank was a normal 48 inches, and in the sump at the end of the trench was 55
inches. We were able to add 112 gallons of water directly into the sump, causing its fluid level to rise
4.75 inches, without any backup into the septic tank. This unit capacity of 23 gallons per inch indicates
that the trench is not operating in a surcharged condition, and the fact that the measured fluid depth is
slightly greater than the reported gravel depth probably reflects the fact that the monitor tube was installed
in the bottom of a low spot of the trench bottom. When additional water was added to the system, the
fluid level in the tank started to rise along with the trench when the fluid depth in the trench exceeded 61
inches. To assess the adequacy of the system we measured the absorption rate when the fluid depth in the
trench was between 59 and 60 inches. When the trench is filled to this depth, which is approximately I to
2 inches below the septic tank outlet, we measured the absorption rate to be 326 gallons per day, which is
slightly over the minimum acceptable rate for a two bedroom residence.
The property owner, Ed Schelin, has informed me that the residence actually has only two bedrooms,
and that he is refinancing it as a two bedroom residence. The house is not being sold and in our opinion
the wastewater disposal system may continue to function satisfactorily for the Schelins for several more
years before it will need to be upgraded.
As can be seen from the site plan, the lot is a large one and the topography slopes generally down from
the southeast towards the northwest at approximately 15%, with the house being constructed on a bench
leveled out of the slope. The house is located between the well and the septic tank, and should the septic
system fail in such a manner as to cause effluent to daylight, it would tend to flow away from the well
towards the northwest.
The soils log indicates that the native material beneath the soil absorption trench is a silty gravel. A
water table was encountered during breakup at 14.5 feet below ground level in the soil test hole, but the
driller's log reports dry silty gravel extending all the way down to bedrock at 23 feet, and no water
production in the bedrock borehole until 260 feet. This low production aquifer is confined and artesian
as evidenced by the 40 foot static water level measured this year.
The following is a possible assignment of waiver analysis points in conformance with ADEC SCRO's
1985 "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines".
Distance to aquifer (260' - 10' depth of tank bottom= 250') 7.8
Soil Sorption ((13' x 2.5) + (237'x 6))250 = 5.8
Permeability (all material with pert rate > 50 minlnch) 3
Water table gradient (assume 0% parallel to ground elevation differential) 2.9
Total 22.2
By this waiver point assignment it appears that there is little potential for contamination of the drinking
water aquifer should the septic tank start to leak. The absence of bacteria in the water sample and the low
nitrate reading provides further reassurance that there will be no potential public health problem created as
a result of granting this waiver.
Because of the large lot size in this area, granting a lot line waiver allowing the existing soil absorption
trench to remain within 3 feet of the the property line common with Lot 21 will have no impact on the
ability of the owners of Lot 21 to upgrade their wastewater disposal system at such time as it is needed.
