Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Septic Upgrade Design for Homestead Hills Subdivision; Lot 3, Block 3 To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is currently served by a private well and septic system. The exising drainfield does not pass municipal requirements and is in need of an upgrade prior to the sale of the house. Two test holes were excavated in the northwestern comer of the property. The proposed septic system will be designed within the 30 foot radius of test hole #2. We are proposing that a 1250 gallon septic tank and dual five foot wide drainfelds be installed. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached are logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. In TIN I, the soils below the organic layers are a GM/SM material to a depth of 8 feet and then transitions to a SP material to a depth of 10 feet (bottom of test hole). In TH#2, the soils below the organic layers are a ML material to a depth of 13 feet (bottom of test hole). Groundwater was found at 8 feet in TII#1 and TH#2 was dry on the day of excavation. Groundwater measurements had the same readings seven days later. A percolation test for TII41 was performed between the depths of 3.5 feet to 4.0 feet which had a percolation rate of 24 minute/inch. A percolation test for TH#2 was performed between the depths of 4.0 feet to 4.5 feet which had a percolation rate of 1.9 minute/inch. The pecolation data for TII#2 is inconsistent with the soils classified. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils, an application rate of 0.6 gallons/day/f,2 should be used. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 24 & 1.9 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.6 gallons/day/f,2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. Minimum Absorption Area: 1000 f,2 f. Total Depth: 7 feet (max.) g. Effective Depth: 4 feet h. SURFACE RATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed upgrade. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography site plan, the average topography of this property is a 0 to 5 percent running from approximately south to north; in short, there are no slope concerns. The trench is to be installed parallel to slope contours. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. Mr. Poet: On 5/17/2006 a site visit was made to perform a well and septic adequacy test for the purpose of obtaining a Certificate of On-site Systems Approval (COSA). The septic system consists of a 1250 gallon septic tank that was installed on 11/16/2000, two drainfields and a flow diverter. The drainfields installed on 8/4/1980 are 3 feet wide, 36 and 51 feet long, and have an effective depth of 7 feet. The drainfields installed on 11/16/2000 are 5 feet wide, 50 long each, and have an effective depth of 4 feet. The drainfield that was installed in 1980 is currently not in use. Our testing was performed on the south trench of the 11/2000 system. Prior to the start of the test, the south trench had approximately 26.5 inches of water in it and the north trench had 41 inches in it. Approximately 639 gallons of water was added to the south drainfield, which caused a rise of 10 inches (11.5 inches below invert). This corresponds to 63.9 gallons per inch. Over a period of 150 minutes, the liquid level dropped 1 inch, which corresponds to an absorption rate of 0.43 gpm. Based upon this data, the drainfield will absorb 600+ gallons per day. Given the fact that the drainfield was not completely full ager adding the water and that only the southern drainfield was tested, it is our opinion that the septic system that serves this property will continue to meet MOA absorption requirements. The liquid level were checked on 6/15/2006 and was found to be approximately 16.5 inches in the south trench and 34 inches in the north trench.
