Box 196650, Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 (907)343-7904 Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Bruin Park; Lot 10, Block 4, To whom it may concern: The existing 2 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system currently does not meet MOA standards and needs to be upgraded. Our clients have requested an approved septic sized adequately for a 3 bedroom house. We are proposing to install a grinder pump, a new 1000 gallon septic tank, and a deep trench type drainfield. One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing and profile drawing, the average topography below the drainfield varies from 25-35 percent slope running approximately east to west. The profile drawing shows that the drainfield will be set deep enough that at a 25 percent slope 2 feet above the distribution line it does not intercept with the 35 percent slope 50+ feet downhill of the proposed drainfield. 5. WAIVER: We are requesting an 85 foot waiver from the well to the proposed septic tank, a 80 foot waiver to the proposed drainfield, and a 70 foot waiver to the proposed alternate site. The well is in a pit and will be upgraded to municipal regulations as part of the waiver package The following items are justification for the waivers: The lot is gently sloping downhill from the well to the septic system. If the septic system was to overflow, it appears that the effluent would not travel toward the well head. 3701 E. The other path of contamination is subsurface migration wastewater. As can be seen on the attached well logs, the aquifer is relatively deep with well ranging from 130-189 feet deep. Water was reached at approximately 127-175 feet with silt, sand, clay, and hardpan soils that have served to inhibit the migration of untreated wastewater into the aquifer. • Recent water sample results indicated nitrate levels to be non-detectable and zero coliform bacteria. • The property has been served by a well and septic system for over 44 years with no adverse affects to the water quality. Based upon the aforementioned facts, it appears that there is minimal risk associated with granting the requested 70 and 85 foot separation distance waivers. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation and waiver would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. The engineer plans to permanently decommission this old system in place of a new septic absorbtion field. The new septic tank and absorbtion field will be no closer than the older system at 70 feet. The new septic absorbtion field will be 11 feet deep. Well Data The subject water well did not have a well log, however there were 4 well logs in the area submitted by the Garness Group to determine the soils strata for the area. The well log from Bruin Park Block 4 Lot 9 shows the total depth at 130 feet. Garness Group indicate the wells in the area range from 130 to 189 feet deep. And water was reached at approximately 127-175 feet with silt, sand and clay and hard pan wchich has served to inhibit the migration of untreated wastewater into the aquifer.
