Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref: Septic System Upgrade Design for Lot 12, Block 8; Mountain Park Estates S/D To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The existing septic system consists of a 1250 gallon septic tank and a bed type drainfield. The existing drainfield is surcharged and must be upgraded. A test hole was excavated north of the existing bed where the proposed upgrade will be located. The proposed septic upgrade will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. We are proposing that a new 1500 gallon S.T.E.P. tank and a deep trench type drainfield be installed. Comments regarding the proposed design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: Attached arc the logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. The soils below the organic layers are a SM material to a depth of 3.0 feet and then the soils transitions to a GP/SP material to a depth of 6.0 feet. At 6.0 feet the soils transition to a ML material to a depth of 14.0 feet (bottom of test hole). No groundwater was encountered during the excavation of the test hole. A percolation test was performed between the depth of 3.5 feet to 4.0 feet which had a percolation rate of 2.54 minute/inch. A percolation test was performed between the depth of 7.0 feet to 7.5 feet which had a percolation rate of 21.8 minute/inch. It is our opinion that due to the overall appearance of the soils and that the majority of the proposed trench absorption area will be in the GP/SP material; a application rate of 0.8 gallons/day/R2 should be used. 2. TRENCH DESIGN: a. Percolation Rate: 2.54 & 21.8 minutes/inch b. Allowable Application Rate: 0.8 gallons/day/fi2 c. Number of Bedrooms: 4 d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day e. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed upgrade. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography site plan, the proposed trench is to be installed in a generally flat area; in short, there are no slope concerns. The owner, Mrs. Thomas, reports that her septic system is failing. They are unable to run laundry without the system backing up, and could not take showers. AE7CS drilled several holes on her property to find soils adequate to support a new on-site septic system. The soil perced out at 127 square feet per bedroom in two places, in a strata from 2.5" to 5e. However, space is severely limited on the lot. Enclosed is a diagram which illustrates this. on the north side of the good test is a driveway. on the other side of the driveway, the soils failed. on the west side of the soils test is the old septic system, which we need to stay 10 feet away from (2 times the gravel depth). on the east side is the road, and to the west, another property line. Enclosed is the design for a system for this lot. it needs to be as large as possible, because if it ever fails, there will be no other place on the lot to make another upgrade. This is because the only space physically available elsewhere on the lot would be north of the driveway, and the soil there failed a perc test, or west of the system, and that would be too close to the well on this lot and adjacent lots. To make it as large as possible, a waiver of distance to the lot line on�Q J the east side is needed. This would place the system within 2 feet of the property line. If the 4 bedroom residence on the property is to house 8 people, the average load on the system can be expected to be 600 gallons per day or .49 gallons per minute. During the test, the system accepted 250 gallons in 70 minutes. This indicates an average effluent acceptance rate of approximately 3.57 gallons per minute at the time of the test.
