Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 RE: McMahon #1 Blk 6 Lot 3 Proposed Septic System Upgrade To Whom It May Concern: Attached please find the application and supporting documentation to upgrade the septic system for the referenced property. The original septic system was installed in 1978 to serve a 3 bedroom house. It is proposed to upgrade the house to 4 bedrooms. A new 4 bedroom septic system is proposed, and the existing drainfield will be retained and expanded to 4 bedrooms. The proposed design is based upon two test holes dug on April 23, 2007. Test hole #1 was dug to 13.5 ft with no water encountered when the hole was dug or after a 7 day monitoring period. The addition to the existing drainfield is based upon Test hole #1. A percolation test conducted between 3.5 and 4.0 ft resulted in a rate of 2.4 minutes per inch. The soils were silty sand and gravel with pockets of silt interspersed. An application rate of 1.0 gpd/ft' is used in the design, because of the silt pockets. The soil log is attached. Test hole #2 was dug to 18.5 ft with no water encountered either while digging or after 7 days of monitoring. A percolation test conducted between 6.0 and 6.5 ft resulted in a rate of less than 1 minute per inch. The soils were sand and gravel, and the soil quality was sufficient to act as a natural sand filter. An application rate of 1.2 gpd/ft2 is used in the design. The soil log is attached. The design criteria for the 4 bedroom trench are as follows: 4 Bedrooms x 150 GPD/BR = 600 GPD System Type: Deep trench Application rate: 1.2 gpd/ ft' 600 GPD / 1.2 gpd/ft' = 500 ft' required Maximum Depth: 12.5 ft Effective Depth: 6.0 ft Proposed Length: 45 ft Absorption Area: 540 ft2 The proposed 1 bedroom trench will be connected to the existing trench, with a 2 to 5 ft space between the trenches. The distribution pipe in the new section will be installed at the same elevation as the existing distribution pipe. A lot line waiver for 2 ft to the east lot line is requested. The adjacent lot to the east already has a primary and a secondary drainfield, so the property should not be adversely impacted. There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system. There are no slope concerns. I am not aware of any adverse effect that this upgrade would have on any adjacent properties' water and wastewater treatment needs. Thank you for consideration of this permit application.
