Dear Sirs:
The purpose of this letter is to provide the required design narrative in support of our application for a
permit to install water supply and wastewater disposal facilities to serve a planned 3-bedroom residence
on S2, SE4, NE4, SE4, NW4, of Section 25, T12N, R3W, located at 12940 Michael Road. A site plan,
soils logs, design drawings and specifications and soils log are enclosed for your review.
Development of this property is complicated by the presence of an intermittent stream that traverses
roughly across the middle of the lot, leaving only limited areas that are greater than 100 feet from
surface water. To assess the feasibility of constructing wastewater disposal facilities on this property we
dug 3 test holes in May of 2009 at the locations shown on the site plan, and monitored groundwater
levels in each throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons. Test hole #2 proved to have the most
optimum soil conditions with clean, dry gravelly sand extending between 1.5 and 8.0 feet below ground
level. This sand material percs slightly faster than 1 minute per inch. A seasonal high groundwater
level was observed at 9.0 feet below ground level. A second perc test (2a) was conducted on 10/23/09
approximately 30 feet east of TH#2 to prove up a somewhat larger useable septic area.
Due to the excellent percolation characteristics of the native sand, in combination with the limited
available area, we propose to base the design on a soil application rate of 1.2 gpd/sq, fi, which is
normally used for soils with perc rates between 1 and 5 minutes per inch. This application rate should
work equally well for this cleaner material, and the native sand should provide adequate filtration of the
effluent. The proposed design is for a 5-foot wide drainfield with 2.5 feet of sewer gravel under the
distribution pipe. Using 1.2 gpd/sq, fi./day, the length of a standard 5-foot wide drainfield for a 3
bedroom residence would be (3 x 150)/01.2/5 = 75 lineal feet. With 2.5 feet of gravel under the
distribution pipe, the length reduction factor (calculated per the wastewater ordinance) would be 0.6364
- giving a total required drainfield length of 48 feet.
A replacement site for an ATS system is shown on the site plan. The proposed system is not expected to
have any significant impact on present or future water supply and wastewater disposal systems serving
adjacent properties, nor will it have any significant impact on reserved space-surface and subsurface, or
on drainage. Please give me a call at 345-1355 if you have any questions on this submittal.
Sincerely,
Ted Moore, P.E.

Wastewater disposal system
Specifications
1.0 General:
1.1 The scope of the project consists of installing a 1250-gallon STEP tank that pumps effluent
into a 48-foot long by 5-foot wide soil absorption drainfield with 1.0 feet of filter sand and 2.5 feet
below the horizontal distribution pipe (2.8' total gravel).
1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor
deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections.
All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform to Municipal and State
requirements. All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless
specifically waived.
1.3 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain any necessary utility locates, and to work
around any buffed utilities.
1.4 Unless agreed otherwise, the contractor shall be responsible for any tree clearing and
grubbing necessary to complete the project.
1.5 The contractor shall provide adequate cover material and rough grading over all system
components to ensure that proper drainage is achieved after settlement and that there are no residual
depressions. Insofar as possible the contractor shall minimize damage to trees and existing lawn areas.
1.6 Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the homeowner shall be responsible for finish grading
after the soil is compacted, and seeding all areas disturbed by the construction.
1.7 Prior to the start of construction the property owner shall arrange for a professional land
surveyor to stake out the proposed well location 2 feet south of the north property line and 28 feet east
of the intermittent stream. The surveyor should confirm that this well site is at least 103 feet from the
septic tank standpipes on the lot to the north. Next~ the surveyor should set laths at approximatelF 25-
foot intervals in the vicinity of the proposed STEP tank and drainfield to delineate the l O0-foot
protective radius from the well and the l O0-foot offset from the intermittent stream-
2.0 STEP Tank:
2.1 A new 1250-gallon Municipally approved STEP tank shall be installed in the general
location shown on the site plan, with particular care taken to minimize disturbance of mature trees, and
to ensure that it is outside the 100 foot setback from the well and surface water.
2.2 All pipe connections to the tank shall be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings.
2.3 The discharge line from the septic tank shall be 1.25" diameter schedule 40 PVC or HDPE.
2.4 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain the necessary Municipal electric permit and
inspection, and shall provide a copy of the electrical inspector's report to the engineer overseeing the
construction of the wastewater disposal system.
2.5 The second compartment of the tank containing the lift pump mechanism shall be equipped
with a watertight, insulated manhole riser and cover extending a minimum of 6" above final grade with
positive surface drainage away from the manhole. The contractor shall be responsible for determining
the necessary length of the manhole riser. The anticipated riser length is approximately 8 feet.
2.6 The on, off, and alarm floats shall be set at the elevations specified by the lift station
supplier, and their proper operation shall be verified by the contractor.
3.0 Soil absorption drainfield:
3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed in the location shown on the site plan by
excavating a 48-foot long by 5-foot wide drainfield footprint to a depth of 6 feet below ground level.
3.2 The bottom of the excavation should be level. A total of 1.0 feet of washed ISF filter sand
shall be placed in the excavation and compacted by foot to bring the elevation up to 5.0 feet b.g.l.
3.3 A total of 2.8 feet of sewer gravel shall be placed on top of the sand with the distribution
pipe laid level such that the pipe invert is no less than 2.5 feet above the bottom of the sewer gravel.
The distribution pipe shall be 1.25" diameter schedule 40 PVC with 3/16" holes drilled in the bottom
atl 8 inch spacing.
3.4 Monitor tubes shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on the design
drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be perforated.
3.5 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the entire top surface of the sewer gravel, prior to
backfill.
3.6 The backfill shall be mounded a minimum of 6 inches above original ground level.
3.7 The homeowner shall be responsible for arranging to have the site finish graded after the
backfill material has stabilized, and for placement of adequate seed to promote rapid revegetation.
4.0 Inspections:
4.1 A minimum of 5 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project:
(1) initial stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans,
specifications and construction procedures, (2) after the native material has been excavated to expose the
infiltrative surface to ensure that it conforms with the soil test information, (3) after the filter sand has
been placed and compacted, (4) after the sewer gravel is in place and the distribution pipes have been
laid and connected up to the septic tank, but prior to placement of filter fabric, and (5) after rough
backfill and grading is complete. The septic tank installation inspection shall be in conjunction with one
of the other listed inspections.
4.2 The installer shall coordinate the timing of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently far
in advance to ensure the availability of the engineer.
