P.O. Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 (907) 343-7904 Ref: Aspen Highlands SID #3; Block 3, Lot 12 (7621 Upper Dearmoun Rd., Anchorage, AK) Memo concerning converting CAT III AWWTS to CAT 11 AWWTS septic system To whom it may concern: The permitted septic system was installed on the referenced property on 3/22-23/2012 and started up shortly after the installation. ARM Septic Services, LLC has recently checked the monitoring tubes in the drainfield and found them to be dry. In order to simplify the operation and maintenance of the system, we are proposing that this unit be permanently configured as a CAT 11 system. Our justifications are as follows: According to Leroy Reid, P.E.'s 1982 soil log, the receiving soil has a percolation rate of 10 minutes per inch. Given this percolation rate, a 3.0 gpd/sq.ft. application rate is required for a Cat 11 system. The home has 4 bedrooms, so 200 sq./ft. of absorption area is required for a CAT If effluent (600 gpd 13.0). The existing 2012 drainfield has 800 sq./ft of absorption area. We would also like to note that there is 1 foot of MOA filter sand below the drainrock. The approved On-site Wastewater Inspection Report stamped and signed on 9/9/2009 shows the soil rating to be 6.0 gpd/sq.ft. We request the Inspection Report be amended to show a 3.0 gpd/sq.ft. application rate. At this time, we request that your department approve a CAT 11 configuration to be used at the referenced property. Upon your concurrence, we will have ARM Septic Service, LLC., go to the property remove the actuator from the ball valve or leave the valve in the open position, and have them dace a CAT 11 sticker on the control panel. Box 196650, Anchorage, Ak 99519-6650 (907) 343-7904 Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Aspen Highlands #3; Block 3, Lot 12 To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to rebuild the existing (undersized) drainfield and install a new 1500 gallon S.T.E.P. tank with Qum~ics controls/floats, and install a 650 Aerocell trickling filter. The proposed re-built bed will be 20 feet in width rather than the 15 foot max stated in code. The additional 5 feet in width will not compromise the longevity of the re-built bed due to the incorporation of a CAT III nitrogen removal systean. Also, during construction the contractor will be prohibited from walking equipment on the bottom of the bed to ensure that the native soils will not be compromised (Please state as provision on permit). The Quanics product may be switched out with the Orenco Advantex treatment system if the home owner chooses to do so. GEG discussed the option of digging additional testholes with the homeowner to see if it would be possible to install a conventional septic system and they opted not to pursue this choice. 1. SOILS: See the 1982 Leroy Reid, P.E. soil log (attached) which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There is a road ditch to the south of the property which runs along Upper DeArmoun Road and is filled with bone rock. There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the topography around the drainfield is relatively flat. In short, there are no slope concerns. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER REQUEST: We are requesting a 5 foot lot line from the proposed drainfleld to the west lot line. There is no concern of separation distances from the proposed drainfield to either the well, house, or septic system located on Aspen Highlands #3: Block 3, Lot 11 (property to the west). The elevation of final grades for the proposed bed will either be at 3701 E. Tudor Road, Suite 101 * Anchorage, AK 99507-1259 Ph: (907) 337-6179 * Fax: (907) 338-3246 * Website: www. garnessengineering.com grade or worst case scenario 1 foot above final grade. In short, there should be no conflict with 3:1 slopes encroaching onto the neighboring lot. During construction, the elevation of the native organic layer (if it exists) will be verified next to the bed. Ground water monitoring (G.W.M.) fzom 1981 was at 6 feet below grade. The new top of sand elevation will be at 1 foot below the native organic layer or higher. In short the 5 foot separation requirement to GW will be met. (Please state this as a provision on penni0. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation and granting of the waiver request would have on adjacent wells or septic systems.
