Box 196650, Anchorage, Ak 99519-6650 (907)343-7904 Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for Kijik Lot 4 To whom it may concern: The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to install a 1000 gallon HDPE septic tank and bed type drainfield. Any sewer line joints within 25 feet of the well casing must be encased in bentonite (as stated on the design). One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached site plan, the topography within 50 feet of the drainfield is relatively flat. In short, there are no slope concerns. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER: Due to the location of the proposed drainfield and to maximize the separation distance from the existing well, we are requesting a 0'+ lot line waiver from the west lot line to the proposed drainfield. The contractor is required to have the west & south lot lines flagged as well as the south easement. 6. WELL WAIVERS FOR SUBJECT PROPERTY: Due to the location of the proposed drainfield, we are requesting a 50 foot waiver from the well on the subject property to the proposed HDPE septic tank and a 70 foot waiver to the proposed drainfield. Comments supporting the waiver requests are listed below: • Attached is the well log for the referenced property. The well depth is 247 feet. The soil appears to be a variation of gravel and clays to a depth of 140 feet and then transitions to bedrock. • Recent water samples results indicated no bacteria present and nitrate levels to be 0.146 mg/L. In short, the water quality is within MOA, state, and EPA requirements. • We are proposing to install a HDPE septic tank will not corrode & leak. • The existing septic system has been encroaching on the well for over 34 years with no signs of any 3701 E. WAIVER TO BED WIDTH: The proposed bed has dimensions of 16 feet by 41 feet. A request for a waiver is required for any proposed bed with a width larger than 15 feet. In short, we request your department issue a waiver to allow a width of 16 feet for the proposed bed. Construction methods will be incorporated to insure that equipment does not "walk" on the bottom of the excavated area. In short there is minimal risk associated with the grating of these waivers. 8. CLOSING: The southwest corner of the lot was selected for the proposed septic system location for the following reasons: The existing septic system was installed in the same vicinity, and the existing sewer line exits from the west side of the house. If we were to install a septic system on the eastern portion of the lot the cost to install the system would increase and the property owner has limited capacity to fund this upgrade. If the septic system were located on the east side of the house, the closest access point for a pump truck would be greater than 120 feet from the new septic tank. The existing septic system has been serving the property for the past 34 years with no adverse impact on the water quality (Recent water samples results indicated no bacteria present and nitrate levels to be 0.146 mg/L), leading us to believe there is no health risk/concerns associated with installing the new septic system on the west side of the house. Trench, 20 ft. long, 8 ft. of gravel. 320 sq. ft. 125. January, 1978. TEST PROCEDURE: System was inspected on May 13, 1982. House cleanout was dry, as was cleanout to trench, cleanout was 65 inches deep. Tank was buried 8.5 feet below ground. Water level in tank was 65 inches. Inflow into tank from house could be heard. Sump to trench has shifted and would not allow access to bottom of sump. Municipal inspection report shows 3034 pipe installed as sump. Liquid level in sump was 44 inches below top of pipe. Top of sump was about 24 inches below top of cleanout. Sump was in an 18 inch surface depression. `Tobben Spurkland P.E. • Mr. Ken Schoenberg May 13, 1982 Page 2 Water was added to the cleanout at a steady rate of 6 gal. per minute for 80 minutes. The water levels in sump and tank were measured every 10 minutes. No change in water levels were observed. The tank was pumped in the afternoon, May 13th. TEST RESULTS: The sump is not perforated, so rapidly changing water levels in the trench cannot be monitored from sump. This system did accept a 480 gal. shock loading and did not show any sign of stress. Therefore, before we may approve the request for sewer and water approval, the following must be completed. (1) Have a percolation test run on the sewer system so that we can determine the adequacy of the system., See handout. (2) Have the septic tank manhole exposed and the septic tank pumped to verify the existence and size of the, tank. (3) The outside hose bib was frozen, so a water sample for bacterial analysis was not drawn. If an upgrade of the sewer system is necessary, a permit must be obtained from this office prior to any construction. A soils test must be obtained prior to the issuance of the permit.
