Anchorage, AK) Memo concerning converting CAT III AWWTS to CAT II AWWTS septic
system
To whom it may concern:
The permitted septic system was installed on the referenced property on 8/14-16/2013 and
was started up shortly after that. ARM Septic Services, LLC checked the monitoring tubes in the
drainfield in April of 2019 and found them to be dry. In order to simplify the overall operation
and maintenance of the system, we are proposing that this unit be permanently configured
as a CAT II system. Our justifications are as follows:
The receiving soil has a percolation rate of 20 minutes per inch. Given this percolation rate, a
4.0 gpd/sq.ft. application rate is required for a Cat III system and a 2.0 gpd/sq.ft. application rate
would be required for a Cat II system. There is 3.5+ feet of MOA filter sand below the drainrock
in this drainfield. After the effluent passes through 2+ feet of MOA filter sand, the effluent should
meet Cat III effluent quality levels. This system has 3.5+ feet of MOA filter sand above the
native (insitu) soils.
The residence on this property has a total of 3 bedrooms, so 112.5 sq./ft. of absorption area is
required for CAT III effluent (450 gpd / 4.0). The existing 2013 drainfield has 125 sq./ft. of
absorption area. In short, the drainfield meets the Cat III sizing requirements.
At this time, we request that your department approve a CAT II configuration be used at the
referenced property, Upon your concurrence, we will have ARM Septic Service, LLC, either
leave the Jandy valve actuator in the discharge position; or have them completely remove the
actuator and leave the valve in the open position. We will also have them place a CAT II sticker
on the control DanA

Ref: Proposed Initial Septic System for Rabbit Creek Heights; Block 8H, Lot 13A
To whom it may concern:
The referenced property is currently vacant. The owner is proposing to build a 3 bedroom house
that will be served by a private well and septic system. We are proposing to install a Quanics
Aerocell treatment system on this property which includes the installation of a 1500 gallon
S.T.E.P. tank and a trench type drainfield. Attached are a site plan and a design drawing showing
the proposed septic system. Two test holes were excavated on the property. The drainfield will
be designed around the 30 foot radius of test hole #2. Comments regarding the design are
summarized as follows:
1. SOILS: See the attached logs which show the soil classifications, grotmdwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results.
2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for dralnfield specifications.
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. A curtain drain has been
installed on the south end of the property. The proposed septic system is located below the
curtain drain.
4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography drawing there are no slope
Concerns.
5. LOT LINE WAIVER REQUEST: The proposed drainfield location is located 1 foot from
the east lot line. We request that your department issue a 1 foot lot line waiver. The owner of Lot
13A is also the owner of Lot 12A and both properties will serve for the single residence. In short,
there is no drainfield on Lot 12A that may encroach on the proposed drainfield on Lot 13A.
There is minimal risk associated with the granting of this waiver.
6. PROPOSED PRIMARY & RESERVE DRAINHELDS TO FOUNDATION DRAIN
WAIVER REQUEST: The proposed primary & reserve drainfield locations are located within
3701 E. Tudor Road, Suite 101 * Anchorage, AK 99507-1259

25 feet from the proposed foundation which will likely require a foundation drain. We request
that your department issue a 25 waiver from the proposed drainfields to the proposed foundation
drain. We are proposing to inslall a Cat III Nitrogen removal system, based upon the high quality
effluent we believe there is minimal risk associated with the granting of this waiver.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic

1. ADVANCED WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS. Municipality
grants permission to Owner to utilize and operate al~ Advanced Wastewater

6. Maintenance and Repairs.
A. ~1 hroughout the term oFthis Memorandum of Undcrstanding. the Owner shall
maintain AWWTS in good repair. In addition, it shall be the responsibility of thc
Owner during the term of this Memorandum of Underslanding, and any extensions or
renewals thereot~ at the owner's sole expense, to pay R~r any and all: (I) repair(s). (2)
