It is shown in red on the as-built how modifications were made to the design. When the construction initially started the secondary field was first installed, generally in the same configuration as shown on the deslgn drawings. Several of the trees that we intended to save system Installed. We did note that over peaty type soil. are not spots in the approaches four feet had to be removed in order to get the The secondary system is over good soil. the northern part of the secondary bed was We checked the water table, and there bed In whlch the water table below the disposal field. There were some slight changes made to the design of the peat bed, When they opened the field up for removal of the old sand and gravel that had been placed over the original visqueen liner, we found that there had apparently been enough cement in the sand and brick to cement it into a relatively hard rock. The contractor graded it and placed a small amount of material over it to smooth lt. The new layer of visqueen was then placed on top of this old collection system. Instead of a foot of rock we only used 9 inches. The intent of the rock was for a collection vehicle and not as a waste treatment vehicle, so the rock was reduced to 9 inches. Eighteen inches of sand was then placed on top of the rock, This is a clean pit-run eand from the Lake Otis sand and gravel pit. The peat, ae it was being removed from the original bed, was segregated into the peat had been contaminated with fill material, and the clean peat. This clean peat was placed in accordance with the drawinga. The contractor substituted 1-1/4 inch laterals instead of the I inch laterals. All holes and configurations were as originally shown on the design documents. The net effect of the larger pipe would be to somewhat reduce our head loss, thereby giving more available head at the pump system. Once the pipes were in place in the peat the Beauty Bark was placed in the excavated holes. The Beauty Bark is to break up the flow from the laterals. There ~as an original distribution pipe that came into the bed that had been disconnected by others. We reconnected it, and moved it in slightly closer to the bed. The contractor felt that insulation should be placed over it to give it better protections. This was done. Upon having everything in place, but before the peat cover was placed on the pipes, the pump lift station was started to see how the distribution plan would work. The water gently welled out of the pipes and spread out across the peat. It appeared that eventually there would be a complete saturation. The size of the holes and spacing appeared to be more than adequate. The pattern was even. Once this was done, the contractor brought in several loads of milled peat to place over the top of the distribution pipes. Only then did they take the remnants of the old peat bed and place on top. Some of this peat has been contaminated with gravel, brick and rock. The home owners will probably remove the brick before they start to reseed the bed. This contaminated peat will not affect the system as it is well above the active peat. The contractor felt because of the drainage condition he needed to bring in additional fill and regrade the ground to ensure that water would not flow between the peat bed and the secondary distribution system. He brought in a silty sandy fill which was pushed out to build a terrace between the two beds. He then ditched around so that the flow is to the east-west and to the north-south along the lot lines. On September 20, 1990, I again inspected the bed to see what conditions where. Other than a few minor adjustments to the grading, the system is in good shape. It appears to be working properly. In summary, I believe that this is a better peat bed than the original one in that the sand underneath the peat Rill ensure better quality bed effluent. The secondary bed will then act only as a soil absorption system. Here are points of the design. I intend to the salient 1. The pressure distribution system will use one-eighth inch holes. 2. As rock is too heavy, I intend to place "Beauty Bark" around each of the outlet points. This will keep the peat away from the holes without settlement. It will also break up the stream of effluent from the outlet. 3. If the Blakes are agreeable, I want to recycle some of the liquid back into the septic tank to see if we can get better nitrate removal. I've made a simple sketch of the test sump. 4. The system will be with the Maine studies smaller. It will be more by Dr. Rock at Orono. in line 5. There will be 18 inches of the filtering sand under the peat. 6. There will be 3 feet of peat to compensate for the settling previously experienced. 7. I will develop a compaction testing schedule to bring the density of the peat in line with Dr. Rock's work, i.e., 6.1-7.4 #/ft$. Please review the design, then issue a permit if you, have no questions. Block 9H, Lots 13A and 14A To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system includes a 1500 gallon lift station, a peat treatment mound, and a bed type drainfield. During a site visit completed by GEG, it was discovered that a curtain drain existed between the back of the house, and both the drainfield and the peat mound encroach on the curtain drain. The location of this drain was professionally located by a sewer and drain company. The distance between the drain and the peat mound is approximately 27', and the distance between the drain and the drainfield is approximately 22'. The distance between the ouffall of the curtain drain and the septic tank is 50'. The property is currently for sale and will be occupied as of 8/22/12. We are proposing to test the water rtmning out of the curtain drain outfall for coliform bacteria every month for three months. Should the drain outfall test positive for coliform bacteria in 90 days, we propose to design and install a new 1500 gallon lift station and a Quanics Aerocell 650 pod on top of the existing drainfield. We request at this time a conditional COSA approval based upon our sampling plan with the separation distances previously stated. Box 196650, Anchorage, Ak 99519-6650 (907) 343-7904 Ref: COSA approval & Waiver Requests for Rabbit Creek View and Heights Block 9H, Lot 14A ~ ~ gA To whom it may concern: Gamess Engineering Group Ltd, (GEG) completed a septic and well test on the referenced property in the spring of 2012 while there was still several feet of snow on the ground. Later, during a high water alarm repair, A+ Home Services discovered a sewage discharge on the property (revealed under the melting snow pack), approximately 20' North of the septic tank. After this observation, exploratory digging took place to find the source of the sewage. A broken sewer line was discovered just outside of the STEP tank. This broken pressurized line was discharging effluent into what is believed to be an old abandoned foundation drain which was routed into or near an old abandoned septic tank. The pressurized line was repaired, and the old foundation drain outfall was abandoned in place. During the repair, a curtain drain was also discovered. This curtain drain outfall was found 55' away from the septic tank. Per an agreement with your department, GEG proceeded to take samples (approximately every 30 days) to test for Fecal Coliform at the curtain drain outfall for a period of three months. It should be noted that GEG inadvertently stated that we were testing for Colifrom bacteria in our conditional request letter of 8/15/12, when we were intending to test specifically for Fecal Coliform. Our first sample tested negative for Fecal Coliform. The second sample was taken during an isolated rain event that lasted for several weeks, while your department was onsite. During this sampling, the outfall of the curtain drain was underwater and the drainage swale along the Northeast property line was full of water. An accurate isolated sample from the ontfall of the curtain drain could not be obtained. The sample was tested positive for Fecal Coliform (19 col/100mL). It is likely that the source of this Fecal Coliform came from upslope of our client's property. The 3rd and final sample was taken recently near the 90 day mark (after the rain subsided), and tested negative for Fecal Coliform. We believe that the sampling confirms the fact that untreated effluent is not migrating laterally into the curtain drain from either the peat mound, or the drainfield. 3701 E. Both of these items have been filled to prevent ponding water. During the filling around the well casing, the contractor observed water overflowing from the top of the sanitary seal. It is our understanding the Aarow Pump and Well Service had previously replaced the plug in the top of the well casing to stop the water from daylighting from the top of the well. Since then, Arrow Pump m~d Well Service returned to make some adjustments to the well plug. Upon our inspection several weeks later, it appears that Arrow was successful in plugging the top of the well. At this time, we request that a non-conditional COSA be issued for this property. ~.e's~.Reg~rd~Q~t Jeff G~ess'xP.EJ, M.S. ere?!~te~ 3701 E.
