The existing system has failed with septic tank effluent occasionally daylighting in the vicinity of the existing dralnfield. The present septic tank is a 1,250 gallon concrete tank, malmfactured by Espinosa and installed in 1974. This tmtk is a one comparmrent tank. The improvement that we are recommending is the installation of a shallow trench drainfield on a different location on the lot. The location we have selected is approximately 30 feet south of the existing drainfield. We are recommending the installation of 150 linear feet of drainfield ,afth m'o lines at 75 feet each. This dmi~ffield will be connected to the existing septic tank. The condition of the septic tank will be verified at the ri~ne the field is installed. The location size of the new drainfield was determined based on the altached soil logs. Test hole #1 was excavated at the approximate center of the lot to the west of the existing driveway. The upper strata of soils appear to be competent to support a dralnfield. There was some evidence of possible ground water infiltration in the vicinity of this test hole, at a depth of approximately 8.7 feet. A newly installed field will be more than 4 feet above the potential area of ground water. A second test hole was dug some 70 feet east of the original test hole to verify that the soils were sufficiently consisteut to allow a drainfield to be extended in this area. The second test hole confirmed the adequacy of the soils. We a shallow to stay well above the possibility of ; the seasonal water. No known wells am within the separation distances required by 18 ACC 72. This proposed system will have no deleterious effect on existing on-site systems on adjacent properties. This proposed upgrade is to replace an existing sub-surface system. There are no known reservations other than for upgrading an on-site sub-surface system. Drainage is generally to the south and west away from the proposed drainfield. Surface slopes are adequate to allow proper drainage away from the location of the proposed field. This investigation was performed in accordance with your request of June 13, 1974, and those procedures outlined in a letter dated September 13, 1971 by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department of Environmental Quality. A single test hole was put down within the Lot 1 area for the purpose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted backhoe and the test hole was extended to a total depth of 14.5 feet below ground surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01. Ground water was not encountered in the test hole. We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you. Criterium Alaska Engineers (CAE) applied for and received a permit to upgrade an existing septic system for this 4 bedroom residence on October 19, 1995. As part of their submittal they included two soil test hole logs that were produced in August/September 1995. The septic design was approved showing bottom of trench to be 4 foot above groundwater as noted on the testhole. Both the design and the testholes were in compliance with the septic code at that time. Unfortunately, CAE did not file any inspection reports on the installation and there is no record as to who did the installation. As part of our inspection to document the septic system the verified the depth and locations of the septic trenches and did not encounter any groundwater. We re-established what we believe to be the original grade of the area after 25 years, and noted that the existing system was constructed per existing code in 1995 and as permitted; 4' above the groundwater level at that time. Although the MOA has modified many of its criteria since the time of approval and construction of this system, we believe based on our inspections to date that the system met the MOA septic code at the time of construction and respectfully request that you issue the COSA.
