The system w~s alleged to be a 1000 gallon septic tank with f~o log cribs ~ a drain field. My findings of this system sre as follows: 1. This system does not have a septic tar~, ~is was verified by digging down into ~le area of the alleged tank and ex%0osing the crib and then having the log crib p~Tg~ed and verfying that it ~s indeed a crib and not a se[~ic tank. When you flushed the toilet in a matter of seconds you cou]J ?~ar and see water running spilling directly into ~%e ].og crib. In addition ~%e water level in this c~ibwas within a foot of the top ground and above the level of the logs indicating that this is not adequate for seepage, even though one were to install a 1000 gallon septic tank ahead of the system. 2. There are pipes sited in the horse yard and in the northwest corner of the yard, and there is another pipe in the vacinity of a tree located just approximately 10 to 15 ft. from the crib. This ~as represented as a drain field system nd when the Health Departnmnt made their inspection in early Sept~nber of 1977. This sytem became suspect when I re~Dved the oa~xs fr~n tine standpipes and saw bare grou~]d in two of them and a slight amount of water in the third one. After investigation I re~ved the first pi[~ and found ti%at there was nothing attached to it. This was the closest one to the crib. I then v~t over into the horse yard and pulled that pipe out of the grocmd and found it was buried into the ground with no pirms connected to it. ~ then in your presemce I dug ap the pipe in the northwest corner of the lot ~nd found that this pipe also was not connected to ~]ything. To the '~est of ~ knowledge none of these pipes are lx>0ked up to the sewer syst~n and apparently v~re placed by the previous o~ner knowing full well that t/~is was not an adequate syste~l. 1%~uld recomend that you contact a attorney and get s~0e advice_ as to what your next step should be to protect your intkrests. It would appemr from the information ti]at previous owner [nislead the people from the Municipal Departm~ent of Health and Environmntal Protection as to the nature of what was actually in tJ~e ground. This misinformation appears to go back to 1971 when the first Health Authority was performed on the septic tank and then followed up in 1977 when you purchased the property. You will then need to install a 1000 gallon septic tank and drain field to bring the syst~n up to standards. In my experience in %~rking with on-site sewer systems in the Anchorage Municipality since 1974 I have uever seen a case such this.
