The installation is complete and the two new trenches are 11.5-12.5 feet apart. The original design caused for an effective depth of 7 feet. One trench has an effective depth of 7.0 feet and the other has an effected depth of 7.36 feet. Based upon the effective depth of the deepest trench. The separation distance between the two trenches should be 14.7 feet. Unfortunately during installation of the second trench the contractor as well as the GEG inspector failed to confirm the separation depth between the trenches based upon effective depth and only confirmed 10 foot separation. As discussed with you on 9/11/2015 it seems unreasonable to excavate out one trench, fill it with dirt, and install a new trench roughly 3 feet further away. We are asking that your department issue a variance from the existing code of twice the effective depth to the existing separation distance of 11.5-12.5 feet. In short, there is minimal benefit to moving the trench; therefore, it was agreed that we would request a waiver for the reduced separation distance. We are requesting that you allow for the existing parallel trenches to be installed as close as 11.5 feet from edge to edge. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If you have any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. The drainfield is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to install a new 1500 gallon S.T.E.P. tank and deep trench type drainfield. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached 2015 soil log which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. It should also be noted that there are isolated pockets (not layers) of soil that are technically impermeable. Percolation tests were formed at 3 different depths. The results are as follows: -3 feet (8.5 min/inch) -5.5 feet (> 1 20min/inch) -7 feet (24 min/inch) Based upon this data we are proposing to use an application rate of 0.45 gallons/day/ftz. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography &awing, the average topography around the proposed drainfield is 5-10%.
