Per Municipal records the septic system consists of a 1000 gallon tank followed by a 34' X 50' (1700 ft2) bed. Both were installed in March 1983. According to the HAA guidelines, drainfields installed in 1983 were required to have a monitor tube and at least one clean-out. According the installation inspection report (1983), neither a clean-out or a monitor tube were ever installed during construction. It is our understanding that the house had been vacant for approximately two weeks prior to our evaluation. The septic tank was pumped by JR's pumping on the morning of February 25, 1998. During our evaluation, it was noted that only one 4 inch diameter PVC pipe was located in the general area of the bed. The pipe was measured to extend 53 inches (4.4 ft.) below grade and was found to be dry. For the purposes of performing an adequacy test it was assumed that this pipe was a monitor tube. Water was added to this tube at an average rate of 2.54 gallons per minute for 155 minutes (394 gallons) which caused the liquid level to rise to 5 inches. It should be noted that the liquid level rose to the 5 inch level immediately after the first 33 gallons was introduced and remained at that level even after an additional 361 gallons was added. After approximately 14 hours (845 minutes), the monitor tube was checked and found to be dry. From this data, it was determined that the drainfield meets the (Municipal) absorption requirements for a three bedroom dwelling. These results are based on the following assumptions: 1. The 4 inch dia. tube is in fact a monitor tube located within the bed system. 2. The monitor tube extends to the bottom of the sewer rock (bottom of the bed sys.) and 6 inches below the invert of the distribution pipes. In order to confirm these assumptions it would be necessary to install a clean out in the bed and verify that the monitoring tube is indeed in the drainrock and is set at the proper elevation (six inches below the distribution invert). NOTE: The adequacy of a septic system is influenced by numerous factors, including, but not limited to, seasonal surface water infiltration, groundwater variations, septic system maintenance (frequency of septic tank pumping, usage of biological additives), condition of drain pipe and pipe joints (which can be damaged by seismic activity and deteriorate with age), type of substances deposited in septic system (cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, misc. objects), and the amount of water being introduced on a continual basis. Consequently, the results of this adequacy test are only valid for the specific day of the test. Furthermore, because of the limited nature of this investigation, it is possible that there are hidden defects which may not have been detected.
