Termination. Chugach may terminate this permit after the giving of thirty (30) days written notice of such termination if.. a. The septic system is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. We are proposing to install a new 1000 gallon septic tank and a deep trench type drainfield. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAI\FIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE RATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the average topography in the area of the proposed drainfield is a 5-10 percent slope running approximately west to east. In short, there are no slope concerns. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER: We request a l foot lot line waiver from the proposed drainfield to the south lot line. The bottom of the two shallow trenches is 5 fent below the ground. The trenches are 40 feet long, 2 feet wide and have a rock depth of 2 feet. The total effective absorption arra, using the table on page 20 of "Manual of Septic Tank Practice", the manual which was used in 19739 computes to be 2 x 40 x 2 / .57 .. 280 sq. ft. According to Table 1 p9 8 of the reference manual the required area per bedroom for a soil with a percolation rate of 2.5 minutes per inch is 93 sq. ft. The required area for a three bedroom residence will then be 3 x 93 = 279 sq. ft. In our conversation you requested information about the water level in the trench before and after the test. There are no monitor tubes installed, and we did not install any during test- ing. The trenches were located by probing with a post hole digger. The hole at the end of one of the trenches were used to monitor the water level during the test. We added 450 gallons of water to the system, this caused a water rise of 12 inches in the excavated hole. At stated in my previous correspondence with you, the water level in this hole dropped 13.5 inches during the next 18 hours. If we assume a void ratio of 55% in the sewer rack a 12 inch rise in the water level is equivalent to 2 x co x .Z5 x 7.5 c 420 gallons. This seems to indicate that there is still 12 inches of available rock depth in these two trenches. That may not be wrong, presently only two persons occupy the residence. A Well and Septic approval is required by the lending institution. Both the well and the septic system are undocumented. According to the owner the lot was developed in 1973 with the well and septic system installed in the spring/summer of that year. The septic system consist of a 1000 gal- steel tank, verified by pumping, and two shallow trenches, each 40 feet long, 2 feet wide and with 2 feet of gravel. Both ends of the trenches were ex- posed and verified. The configuration of the system is shown an the attached sketch. The septic tank is 75 feet from the well. On July 17, 1993 I performed an adequacy test on both the well and the septic system. The static me el of water elellvel a the found at 223 feet. At a pumping rate of 5 gp ll fluctuated between 223 and 225 feet. 450 gallons of water was added to the septic system over a 2.5 hour period. No backup into the septic tank was observed. The water level in one of the trenches was monitored. It rose 12 inches. 18 hours later the water level had dropped 13.5 inches. The total absorption area for this system is calculated to be 336 sq. it. with credit being given to both bottom area and side- walls. This is clearly not adequate based on design criteria. However the system has been in operation for 20 years and can presently handle the design flow from a three bedroom house. In this case the actual performance of the system should be the criteria used to evaluate its acceptability.
