The existing septic system is sized for a 5 -bedroom house. The septic system consists of a 1500 -gallon steel septic tank and a bed type drainffeld that was installed on 9/30/1991. Based upon this information, the tank is almost 30 years old. Rather than inspect it for structural integrity, it is recommended that it be replaced. The drainffeld has recently passed an adequacy test, Per the request of the owner, the septic tank is to be sized for 5 -bedrooms. We are.proposing that either a IM -1530 Infiltrator septic tank or a 1500 -gallon Greer plastic septic tank be installed as shown on the attached site plan and design drawings. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system upgrade (see attached wetlands map). 2. TANK COVER: The existing septic tank has approximately 4.3 feet of cover over it. It appears that an Infiltrator tank may be used for this installation; however, the contractor will need to verify that this type of tank can be installed without out exceeding the maximum 4 -foot soil cover and/or create a depression in the tank area. We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems. If yop IAe any questions, please contact us at 337-6179. The well and septic plan are for a single family residence only. 2. The drawing and or site plan shall be a part of this specification. 3. All materials and workmanship shall meet the Anchorage Department of Health and State Department of Environmental Conservation requirements. 4. All soil tests are advisory to the design and are to be verified or modified in the field by the engineer. 5. All excavations and depths are advisory and are to be verified or modified in the field by the contractor to meet Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Environmental Conservation requirements. 6. It is the responsibility of the owner to obtain all necessary permits or easements and to locate any adjacent multi-family wells. 7. The excavation is to be exactly in the area shown on the site plan, any deviation requires engineer approval. 8. It is always recommended that a surveyor locate the nearest lot line position and the location of any easements. BED 1. The bed is to follow the natural land contour to maintain uniform total depth of the bed bottom. The bottom of the bed shall be level, plus or minus 1.5". The total depth of the bed excavation is not to exceed 5' at any point. The sewer line is to replace the existing sewer line that leads to the existing tank and pit. The old tank and pit are to be abandoned to code. The bed gravel is to be covered with typar fabric material. Soil or combination of soil and extruded board insulation to a depth of 3' or equivalent is to be placed over the leachfield. The area over the bed is to be finish graded to prevent ponding of surface water runoff. The septic tank and leachfield must not be closer than 100' to any existing private well, 150' to any Class "C" well, or 200 feet to any community well. As discussed in your office we are requesting that plans be approved without additional test holes due to the timing of recent regulations changes. As per 15.65.060 H.4 the department may approve beds wider than 15'. We are requesting a bed width of 24' aS there is enough room to work the bed from both sides, there is no slope to cut into and the 24' width will reduce length and increase distribution through the bed limits. These factors alleviate concerns requiring the 15' bed width. We are also requesting use of Ak D.E.C. specifications for sand filter layer as an alternative. These specs are outlined in 18 AAC 72 Table F. The bed location will not effect the neighbors land use as the lot is large enough were lot lines are greater than !00' from the septic location. There are no affected wells, wastewater systems, structures, drainage paths or patterns within 200' of our proposed system. The ground surface is essentially level in the bed area and then rises in the SW portion of the property but not as to affect the leaching area. There is a large area for a replacement system. The septic tank was pumped and verif:Led to have a capacity of 1000 gall.ohs. The seepage pit was charged with 1000 gallons of water and after a period of 24 hours all of the water which had been added had percolated out of the crib. It can be concluded from this test that the sewage system is currently functioning adequately for the three bedroom residence.
