Ref: Proposed Septic System Upgrade for Lot 3A; Hanshew Heights Subdivision
ADVANTEXTm TREATMENT SYSTEM
To whom it may concern:
1. GENERAL: The existing 4 bedroom home is served by a class `B" well and private septic
system. The existing septic system is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. A test hole
was excavated on the property. We are proposing to design the septic system around the 30 foot
radius of this test hole. Due to the limited area available we are proposing to use an Advantex
treatment system and a 5 -wide trench type drainfield.
2. SOILS: See the attached log, which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring,
and the percolation test results.
3. DRAINFIELD APPLICATION RATE: The intent is to install an Advantex Treatment
System that will allow the use of a small drainfield in the area around the 30 foot radius of the
test hole. The Advantex system has received class III approval and we are going to
conservatively assume an application rate of 3.0 GPD/FT2.
4. TRENCH DESIGN:
a. Percolation Rate: 15 minutes/inch
b. Proposed Application Rate: 3.0 gallons/day/ft
c. Number of Bedrooms: 4
d. Design Flow: 600 gallons per day
e. Minimum Absorption Area: 200 ft
f. Total Depth: 8 feet (max.)
g. Effective Depth: 2.0 feet
h. Width: 5 feet

5.ORENCO PACKAGE SYSTEM: The STEP tank with the Advantex Treatment System will
be manufactured by Anchorage Tank & Welding to meet the latest design criteria established by
Orenco Systems, Inc. The point of contact at Anchorage Tank is Lowell McNutt. As with their
standard STEP tank, it is equipped with a high water alar per M.O.A requirements.
6. SURFACE WATER: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic
system upgrade.
7. TOPOGRAPHY: The area around the proposed drainfield is fairly flat. In short, there are no
slope concerns.
8. WAIVER REQUEST: Attached is a copy of the A.D.E.C. waiver granting a 150 foot
waiver from the proposed septic system and to the existing `B" well.
9. CLOSING: I am open to any suggestions from your department that would be an
improvement to the proposed system. I am unaware of any negative impacts that this installation
would impose on adjacent wells, or septic systems. If you have any questions, please call us at

Dear W. Gamess:
On May 5, 2004 this office received your submittal requesting a waiver between an Advantex
wastewater treatment unit serving a single family home located on Lot 3A Hanshew Heights
Subdivision and a public well currently listed as a Class B water system on Lot 2B of Hanshew
Heights Subdivision.
This waiver is approved based on the following:
1. The last sanitary survey on the system indicated that the well was over 300 feet deep and
met minimum construction standards.
2. Information from nearby wells was provided with the waiver request. These well logs
show approximately 185 feet of silt, sand and hardpan soils.
3. The wastewater system in non -corrosive and produces treated effluent.
4. The site is drained such that surface contamination is not a significant risk.
This approval is contingent upon your receipt of any other state, federal or local authorizations which
are required for your project. You are required to obtain all other necessary authorizations before
proceeding with your project. You are advised that if this development will require placing fill in
wetlands or working in a stream, river or lake, permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and

Subject: Waiver Request for Hanshew Heights Subdivision; Lot 3A,
To whom it may concern:
We would like to request that your department issue a separation distance waiver of 150 feet
from the subject class `B" (PWS]D# 211643) well to the proposed septic upgrade on the subject
property. There was a similar waiver issued by your department on Lot 2B, Hanshew Heights
Subdivision to the class `B" well in January of 2003. The following are some mitigating factors
for the justification of the requested waiver:
• The lots are generally flat in the area. There is a slight mound and heavy vegetation between
the well on the adjacent property and the proposed septic system. If the septic system was to
overflow, it appears that the effluent would not travel toward the well head.
• The Advantex tank is made of fiberglass and will not corrode and leak untreated effluent into
the ground.
• The Advantex treatment system is to be installed with a "Vericomm" system that alerts the
service provider, Anchorage Tank and Welding, Inc., of an alarm condition, so that problems
can be corrected immediately.
• The effluent that comes from the Advantex tank is treated to A.D.E.C. secondary standards.
As can be seen on the attached well logs, the aquifer is relatively deep, with approximately 185-
215 feet of silt, sand, and hardpan soils that have served to inhibit the migration of untreated
wastewater into the aquifer. Recent water sample results indicated nitrate levels to be 0.46 mg/L
and coliform bacteria results to be undetected. Based upon the aforementioned facts, it appears
that there is minimal risk associated with the 150 feet separation distance waivers.

results of the above referenced investigation as performed by us
on April 15th and July 7, 1976. The scope of this project is
investigation for suitability of an on-site sewerage system.

The exploration was conducted using a truck mounted Mobile Drill
Model B-50 drill rig with a continuous flight solid stem auger.
The rig is owned and operated by Denali Drilling, Inc. Drilling
was supervised, the test holes logged and percolation test per-
formed by Mr. Terry Barber, Geologist with Alaska Testlab.
The test hole was placed at the approximate location shown on
Figure 2. The log of this test hole is included as Table A of
the report. In interpreting the log, it would be helpful to
utilize the explanatory information contained in Sheets 1 to 3
of this report.
When drilling was completed a 3/4" slotted PVC pipe was in-
serted in the hole to aid in determining the free water level
and to keep the hole open. For the percolation test, the test
hole was filled with water on July 6, 1976, and left overnight
to saturate. On returning the next day, the hole was refilled
with water and the drop in the water level carefully monitored
over the next 60 minutes. The percolation test was not run
until- July because of poor surface drainage.
This procedure is not a standarized percolation test, however,
we understand that the Anchorage Department of Environmental
Quality prefers tests performed in this manner to evaluate a
site for a proposed on-site sewerage system.

Using the above test, the observed minimum percolation rate
was 5.0 minutes per inch. No water table wasobserved during
drilling, but it should be noted that the free water level
normally fluctuates seasonally and with precipitation.

Ref: Hanshew Heights; Lot 2A — Memo concerning Septic Adequacy Test, for the purposes of
obtaining a COSA from the MOA.
To whom it may concern:
The referenced property is served by an Advantex system and a small drainfield. The newer drainfield
was installed in 2004, utilizing the advanced treatment technology, while the 1976 drainfield was left in
place for future use. During a recent site visit to complete an adequacy test, it was observed that the 2004
drainfield was in a failed state. On 10.17.15, ARM Services installed a cleanout and monitoring tube in
the west end of the old 1976 drainfield (after it had been resting for approximately 11 years). ARM
Services noticed during the repair, that the perforations in the 1976 drainfield were all facing up, which
was standard practice during the era that the field was installed. A Bull Run valve (diverter) was then
installed after the AX -20, and the flow was switched over to send effluent to the 1976 drainfield. It should
be noted that ARM Services observed a noticeable plumbing leak coming from the house, even though no
water was being used inside the house. After the repairs were completed, the home owner hired One Stop
Services to camera the 1976 drainfield. It was observed that the lateral is in good condition, and that it
runs approximately 23' before dead ending.
GEG completed a site visit to the property 3 -days later (10/20/15) to complete a pre-soak on the 1976
drainfield, and it was found to contain approximately 40" of liquid. It is believed that between the
plumbing leak that was observed (later identified as a leaky toilet) and the water usage from the home,
that a significant volume of water was introduced into the 1976 drainfield over the 3 -days prior to our pre-
soak. On 10.20.15, GEG introduced a total of 1,170 gallons into the 1976 drainfield for a pre-soak, filling
it to the invert. The next day, the water level was 10" below the lateral. GEG then introduced another
1405 gallons of water into the same drainfield for a septic test, filling it to the top of the lateral line. The
drainfield was monitored 153 minutes later, and the liquid level had subsided to .25" below the invert.
GEG also monitored the drainfield the next morning, approximately 19 hours after the final water was
introduced, and found the liquid level had subsided an additional 8.75" below the lateral.
It was noted during one site visit to the property that the second compartment of the STEP tank contained
a noticeable amount of solids. The homeowner reported that when a technician from the maintenance
company arrived and opened the lid on the AX -20, that 40-50% of the top of the media appeared to be
covered with thick growth. It is likely that the trickling filter bio -mat diminished the treatment system
performance. The homeowner said that he will ensure that the maintenance and cleaning of the Advantex
pod is completed by the maintenance contractor. We will provide your department with a copy of the
maintenance report.

At this time, the 1976 drainfield passed an adequacy test, and the 2004 drainfield is "resting". It is likely
that the failure of the 2004 drainfield was the direct result of the plumbing leak coming from the house
(which was fixed by the homeowner), and the growth inside of the Advantex pod. It is our understanding
that both of those issues have been resolved at this time.
