Dear Mr. Stranberg:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments
regarding soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This
investigation was performed in accordance with your request of August 7,
1974, and those procedures outlined in a letter dated September 13, 1971
by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department
of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the Lot 14 area for the purpose of
defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system.
Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted backhoe and the test
hole was extended to a total depth of 14.0 feet below ground surface. The
final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the test hole.

The nitrate sample taken from the subject well is 1.69 mg/I.
Well
The well was installed in 1975 at a total depth of 210 feet. The static water level is 176 feet.

There is a 10' clay layer at 107'.
Septic Tank
The septic tank was also installed in 1975 and is a 1,000 gal concrete
tank with jet aeration which is no longer in operation.

Dear On Site Services Engineer:
The well on the subject lot is located 96' from the septic tank cleanout
and approximately 95' from the body of the tank. A separation distance
waiver is therefore required from the 100' separation distance mandated
by Municipal Oridinance. We are hereby requesting a waiver be issued
allowing the septic tank to continue to function within the 100'
protective radius of the well.
The septic system was constructed in late 1975 and the well was
installed in November of 1975. An apparent mismeasurement resulted in
the well to be placed too close to the tank. The septic system as-built
along with Health Authority Approval Certifications issued since that
time make no mention of the encroachment within the radius. Water
quality tests performed since 1975 revealed no coliform or other bacteria
and only minute amounts of nitrates. Well water was not affected by the
location of the septic tank.
The well is located approximately 5' upslope from the septic tank. The
total depth of the well is 210' with casing thought to extend the entire
depth of the well. The well Icg indicates soils at the site include gravel
and sands with a 10' lense of clay at a depth of 107'. The presence of clay
normally indicates a very tight soil which would prevent effluent from the
septic tank to migrate to the aquifer serving the well. Static water was
recently found in the well at the 176' level. Contamination appears highly
unlikely.

A recent water sample taken from the well again indicated the absence of
coliform and other bacteria. A minor amount of nitrate (1.69 rog/L) was
found, but well below the acceptable amount for human consumption.
Obviously the effluent from the septic tank is not causing any
contamination to the water produced in the well.
The overwhelming argument to grant the separation waiver to 95' is the
fact the well water is not showing any significant sign of nitrate content.
The tightness of the soil surrounding the well and the current separation
distance of 95' is adequate to prevent any contamination from the
absorption trench. I therefore recommend the waiver of the separation
distance to 95' be granted in this instance.
