Bacteriologica~analysis performed on a water sample taken from the water system on this lot, as well as information receiPed by this office regarding the well, (depth, type, etc.) indicate that this system is also adequate. The Greater Anchorage Health Dis.grict gives its approval of both the sewage disposal system and Water supply system as of this date, July 17, 1963. ~' · Sincerely, DAVID R. L. Box 7002 Ar~choroGe~ Alasko 15 July 1963 Sewage waste disposal for Lot' 3, Block 1, P~yhala Subdivision (4617 Artic Blvd., Spenard) Al~gka Department of Public Health Anchorage Alaska Gentlemen: This is to certify that the following test was performed in the subsoil stre. t~m adjacent to existing leaching well (cess pool) of subject property. A hole 12 inches square wa~ dug in the stratum to a depth of 3 feet below grey,nd surface. The hole was wet and then filled with 12 inches of water at 2:15 P. M., 12 July 1963. It drained empty at 3:26 P. M. the same day. According to this test the soil is classed as adequately pervious for use of a leaehing well or cess pool. The rate of permeability will be about 2.9 gallons per day, per square foot of leaching well surface. This property has a steel septic tsnk, which dispharges to a leaching well (cess pool). The leaching well has been pomped in the spring, for the past 3 years, by Isaacs Cess Pool Service. This company states the material drained by the pumping has been substantially clear of solids. It would appear, therefore, that the septic ta~{ is functioning properly. The septic tank was last pumped in 1957 or 1958 by the same comps~y. The present leaching well (ce~a pool) was contracted in 1958 and. is a log structure° In ocr opinion the improvements on this property have an adequate sewage disposal system. CT SAMPLES FROM FIRE HYDRANTS, YARD HYDRANTS, DRINKING FOUNTAINS OR SIMILAR OUTLETS WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO D I S I N F E C T PROPERLY Bear In mind that water analysis deals with materials present In very minute quantities. The least carelessness in collecting and handling Inay give rise to re~ult~ which are misleading. Arrangements should be made to have water samples reach the laboratory as quickly as possible. After 48 hours the significance of the bacteriological analysis is impaired. For obvious reasons the laboratory prefers to receive samples in the early part of the week, but is willing to accept samples at any time. In collecting samples from TAPS or PUMPS proceed as follows: (a) Thoroughly flush tap or pump by allowing water to run freely for five minutes. (b) Shut off water and flame the outlet with torch or burning paper. The flame should not be merely passed over the outlet, but should be applied until fixture shows indication of being hot. Flame should be directed against inside edge. (c) Open fixture so that a small stream flows. (d) Remove bottle from mailing tube. Hold bottle by the lower half in one hand and with the other remove the screw cap with the fingers, leaving paper protecting cover in place. Fill the bottle to the shoulder. Replace cap with paper cover, screwing firmly into place but do not apply pressure which will split cap. (e) Pack bottle carefully in mailing tube enclosing this completed information sheet, being sure that a simple sketch is included. In collecting samples from STREAMS and RESERVOIRS p~oceed as follows: (a) Remove cap and hold bottle as described under (d) above. (b) Collect sample by holding bottle In a slanting position and sweeping it below the surface in such a manner that water that has been in contact with the hand is not introduced into the bottle. Avoid collecting surface scum and bottom sediment. SAMI'LES MUST BE SUBMITTED IN CONTAINERS PROV~ID~ED ~¥ THE ALASKA DEPA~TMENT OF HEALTH © 150'
