Gentlemen,
In response to your request, on September 289 1982, Mr.
Peter Herstek of our staff viewed the excavation of a test pit
near the southeast corner of the drainfield that you constructed
on the referenced property. He observed bedrock to exist 3.5 to
5 feet below the top of screened washed gravel placed for the
drainfield. To try to define the bedrock further, on September
29, 19829 Mr. Herstek drilled 13 test probes through the
drainfield to drilling refusal, presumably on bedrock, with our
Mobile B-24 track -mounted auger. The results of these field
efforts are presented on the attached three (3) sheets. Be
advised that the B-24 could also have been stopped by boulders.
It appears that bedrock underlies the east half of the
drainfield within the minimum separation required by state
regulations. If this not acceptable to the Department of Health
and Environmental Protection and/or the Department of
Environmental Conservation, you may consider removing the
screened rock, and placing sand in the excavation to obtain the
required separation. When the proper elevation of the system is
obtained, the septic rock could be reused. Unclassified material
could be used to cover the field, however, the drain pipes should
be protected by a sheet of 2 -inch styrofoam insulation placed
horizontally above the pipe if the depth of burial is less than 3
feet.

Dear Mr. Renner:
We have performed a percolation test at your request in the
backhoe pit excavated on the subject lot.
The investigation was conducted on September 28 and 29,
1981, and consisted of examining the pit for soil type and
stratification, excavating a hole for the test, and running
a percolation test. The pit was found to extend to a depth
of 11.5 feet where, according to the excavator, bedrock was
encountered. No standing or seeping water was observed to
this depth. Subsurface conditions were found to be uniform
with depth; the soil is a very dense, very silty sandy
gravel (F3 frost classification, GM unified classification).
A two foot deep hole was hand excavated in a bench at a
depth of four feet, and was filled with water. On the
following day a percolation test was performed in the hole
by Alaska Testlab technicians, according to the procedures
set forth in the "Manual of Septic Tank Practice", by the
U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The
measured percolation rate was 56 minutes/inch.
The bottom of a sewage disposal system should be no closer
than 6 feet from an impermeable layer such as bedrock.
Therefore, a system at this location should be confined to
the upper 5.5 feet. Also, 4 feet of soil cover is necessary
over a system, so the interval from 4 to 5.5 feet is avail-
able for use. A larger interval can be used if an insulated
or mounded system can be approved.
