REFERENCE: Lot 9, Block 5, Prcuss #3 Subdivision
It is requested that you issue a permit to install a new deep trench(upgrade) to serve
the existing three bedroom house on the referenced properD, . A diverter valve will
be installed to allow the existing 3 bedroom trench to be used at a later date.
A test hole was excavated and a percolation test performed. The approximate location of
the test hole is located on the attached site plan. At the time of excavation (5/I 1/2009)
water was not found. Afler seven days of monitoring, no ground water was found. The
proposed site is 7.0' higher than the road and driveway, the septic system will be installed
starling at 8.0' below grade to insure no daylighting of effluent. No cross section drawing
should be required.
We do not anticipate any adverse effects on neighboring wells, septic systems, reserve
areas or drainage patterns by the installation of the proposed septic system. The
construction of this system will not prevent any future development on any of the adjacent
properties.

CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES

GENERAL:
The scope of this project includes the installation of new deep septic trench to
serve the existing three bedroom residence located on the referenced property.
A diverter valve will be installed to allow existing 3 bedroom trench to be
used at a later date.
Construction shall be in accordance with the approved site plan and design
drawings, Municipal permit with any special provisions or conditions, and all
applicable State and Municipal Wastewater Disposal Regulations.
The contractor shall be responsible for obtaining any necessary underground
utility locates.
Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the property o~mer shall be responsible
for final grading areas subsequently depressed from soil settling.
Contractors installing wastewater disposal systems must be certified by the
Municipal Development Services Department or ADEC if required, for
system installations. O~ers installing their own systems must also receive
prior approval from the respective agency.
SEPTIC TANK INSTALLATION:
A septic tank is to be constructed by a certified septic tank manufacturer.
Construction shall include two 4" cleanouts for pumping access. All HDPE
septic tanks are required to have a 4" monitoring pipe installed next to the
tank extending to the bottom of the tank.

The septic tank shall be sufficiently bedded to prevent settling or shifting ofth~ tank.
All standpipes on the septic tank shall extend a minimum of 12 inches above final grade.
Septic tanks installed with less than 4 ft. of cover shall be insulated. All HDPE septic
tanks are required to be covered with a minimum of 2" direct burial insulation, and a
maximum of 4 feet of cover.
A foundation cleanout shall be installed one to four feet from the building foundation. In
the line between the tank and the leachfield there shall be two adjacent cleanouts (unless
an effluent pumping system exists within the septic tank). These cleanouts shall be
located on undisturbed soil not more than 10 fi. from the tank. The first cleanout, in line,
shall be to clean toward the leachfield. The second cleanout shall be to clean toward the
septic tank.
Final grading over the septic tank shall be such flint a positive slope exists away from the
septic tank.
ABSORPTION TRENCII/DRAINFIELD INSTALLATION:
Excavate the proposed trench to the dimensions shown on the design. The bottom of the
excavation shall be within 2 inches of level. If the sidewalls of the excavation become
smeared, they must be raked or scratched (ruffed-up) before gravel (sewer rock)
placement.
Once the gravel is installed, the distribution pipe is to be installed level with the
perforations faced downward. Gravel is then to be placed over the distribution pipe to
provide a minimum of 2 inches of cover over the pipe.
A silt barrier must be installed between the final gravel layer and the native soil backfill.
Ensure the silt barrier covers the entire gravel surface before placing backfill.
Monitor tubes shall be of four (4) inch diameter, installed approximately in the locations
shown on the design, and extend a minimum of 12 inches above final grade. The portion
ofthe monitoring tube extending through the gravel shall be perforated from the bottom of
the trench to the invert of the distribution pipe. This is equivalent to the effective depth of
the gravel as noted on the design.

Backfill over the final gravel layer must not be less than twenty-four (24) inches.
Insulation must be installed when the backfill depth is less than thidycsix (36) inches. Th~
finish grade over the trench must be mounded to prevent the formation of a depression
after settling.
MINIMUM MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Any septic tank proposed for installation must be constructed by a Municipal approved
septic tank manufacturer.

Use of a type of pipe other than listed above must be approved by the inspecting engineer.
Insulation shall be at least 2" thick extruded direct burial polystyrene (Dow Chemical
Company Styrofoam HI or equal).
Septic tank inlets and outlets shall be fitted with watertight couplings (Caulder, Femco, or
equal).
A permeable nontoxic silt barrier (Typar 3401, Mirafi 140N, or equal) must be installed
between the final leachfield gravel layer and the native soil backfill.
All leachfield gravel (sewer rock) shall be 0.5"-2.5' screened gravel with less than 3%
passing the #200 sieve.
When sand is being used as a filter material, its gradation specifications must conform to
current M.O.A. or D.E.C. requirements, which ever requirement applies.

INSPECTIONS:
Typically there will be a minimum of three (3) inspections required during the installation of the
wastewater disposal system. These inspections will occur as follows:
The first inspection must be conducted after the excavation of ditches, pits,
trenches, or beds and before the installation of any gravel. A septic tank may be
set in place, but may not be baekfilled before this inspection.
The second inspection must be conducted after the placement of the silt barrier,
gravel, distribution lines, standpipes, cleanouts, and insulation, but before the
placement ofany other backfill.
3. The final inspection is to occur upon final grading ofthe property.
Often there will be more than these 3 inspections required. Especially with the installation of
.multiple trenches, sand filters, pressurized distribution systems, etc. Thus, the inspecting engineer
ns to be contacted at least 24 hours prior to the start of construction. If necessary, a pre-
construction meeting will take place on-site. The inspecting engineer will not coordinate, direct or
control in any way the contractors activities.
The owner shall contract with the contractor to perform the work outlined in these specifications
and plans and in accordance with the attached M.O.A. permit. There will be no contractual
arrangement existing between the contractor and S & S Engineering. S & S Engineering shall be
the owner's representative and will inspect the work as stated above to document the contractors
activities. Final acceptance ofthe contractors work rests with the owner and the M.O.A.
S & S Engineering shall have no liability to the owner or to others for acts or omissions of the
contractor or any other persons performing work on this project or the failure of the contractor to
carry out the work in accordance with these construction documents. S & S Engineering's
inspecting engineer will not be responsible for the construction means, methods, techniques,
sequence, procedures or the safety precautions incident to this project.

Subject: New sewer permit - Preuss Subd. Addn #3, Block 5, Lot 9
Gentlemen:
The owner has requested we proceed forward to obtain a septic permit on the subject
lot in order to replace the tank that was determine, d to be in failure. The general si.ope
of this lot is flat, except for the are around the driveway which is where the sephc ~s
located. The septic tank and field are deep enough however that no daylighting m
visible or anticipated.
There are no public or private wells within 200' of our proposed system location except
as noted. There is no surface water within 100' of the proposed system and there are no
known curtain drains within 50'. We do not expect there to be'any adverse effect on
adjacent lots by the development of this system.

Subject: Soil Investigation for Sanitary Sewer System, Lot 9, Block 5,
Pruess Subdivision, Eagle River, Alaska
Dear Mr. Zi,:nerman :
At your request of April 17, 1979, we conducted a subsurface soils investi-
gation at the proposed location of the sanitary sewer system on the subject
lot. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the
Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection.
This investigation, which was accomplished on April 17, 1979, consisted of a
test pit excavated to a depth of 14 feet below the existing ground surface.
The test pit was sited according to your instructions and its location is
shown in attached Drawing A-01. Excavation was accomplished with a backhoe.
Ail material excavated was continuously monitored by an experienced
engineering geologist.
The topography at the excavation site is generally horizontal. At the time
of the investigation the site had original vegetation consisting of aspen and
birch trees. The top of the test hole was located at original ground
surface.
The soils encountered in the excavation are shown in the test hole log in
Drawing A-0]. This log displays specific conditions encountered at the test
location. However, subsurface conditions may vary in other parts of the lot
without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not
encountered and bedrock was not encountered. At the time the hole was
excavated seasonal frost was not present and permafrost was not encountered.

Date of Test: May 13, 1992
Depth of Well: 129' taken from well log
Static Water Level: 93' measured at time of test.
Standards: The Municipality of Anchorage requires a flow of 150 gallons
per day per bedroom, this 3 bedroom home requires 450
gallons per day.
Test: The well was pumped at an average rate of 4.2 gallons per minute
for 2 hours.
Results: The well produced 500 gallons in 120 minutes. The maximum
drawdown during the test was 1.3'. The drawdown fully recovered
in-less than 30 'seconds.
Conclusion: The well is adequate to meet the Municipality of Anchorage
Standards for a 3 bedroom house

Daily Design Flow: 3BR x 150 gallons/day/BR = 450 GPD
Test: 500 gallons of water were injected into the absorbtion system
in a 2 hour period.
Results: The system accepted more than a daily design flow in 2 hours
with no rise in the monitor tube liquid' level.
Conclusion: The absorbtion system is currently functioning adequately.
