Box 196650, Anchorage, Ak 99519-6650 (907)343-7904 Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Preuss S/D #3; Block 11, Lot 2A; To whom it may concern: The existing 4 bedroom house is served by public water and a private septic system. The existing septic system is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. Per directive from the property owner, we are proposing to install a bull run type flow diverter prior to the existing septic tank so that the flow can be diverted between the old septic system and the proposed septic system. We then propose to install a new 1250 gallon septic tank and a deep trench type drainfield. One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached log which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the topography around the drainfield is 1-3% running north to south. In short, there are no slope concerns. 5. LOT LINE WAIVER: Due to site constraints, we are requesting a 5'+ lot line waiver from the west lot line to the proposed drainfield. There are no septic systems with in 10 feet of the proposed drainfield on the neighboring property. See note on drawing page 2 of 2 regarding the neighbors water service line. There were a total of 13 cleanouts, 6 were cut off below grade and placed inside cast iron sleeves. It was impossible to tighten the caps since there wasn't room between the cap and 5" sleeve. Surface water from melting snow was running into the system over the top of the C.O.s and the system was flooded. There was 54" of liquid in the second tank compartment (CO#6) and 5" in the distribution line clean out (#11) at the end of trench #2. I suggested that couplings with extensions be replaced over each of the below grade cleanouts, tank and trenches be pumped and watch for continued ground water infiltration. System was checked and test was begun on 7 April. 570 gallons were added to C.O. #1 at the shop. Flow was observed in Co's #3 & 4 and rise noted in tank.. There was 9.5" of liquid in the shop cleanout before adding wastr, indicating a possible blockage. Level rose to 10" during flow while used motor oil was visible on the surface of the flow in the cleanout before the tank (#4). After flow was changed to ATCO #7 level in C.O. #1 dropped to 7.5" indicating part of the blockage had wased through. Flow was changed to ATCO #7 when 48" of liquid was recodded in the tank. 654 gallons were added to trench #1 creatmngga rise in the monitor from 14" to 55.5" of liquid or 41.5" rise. Liquid then appeared in the end of trench cleanout(#10) and monitor in trench #2 began to rise. Trench #2 monitor rose from LL of 19" to 58.8", for a rise of 39.8" while 746 gallons were added. Flow was stopped when LL approached 60"(depth of rock). Recovery in gallons was figured 3 ways: 1st way trench #1 44" rise/654 gallosn 11" recovery in 24 hrs. 14.86 average gallosn per inch rise X 11" recovery = 163.46 gal. trench #2 39.875" rise/746 gallons 15.875" recovery in 24 hrs. 18.7 average gallons per inch rise X 15.875 = 296.997 gallons 163.46 + 296.99 = 460.45 gallons absorbed/24 hrs. -2- 2nd way Refill trenches after recovery to highest float levels - Record gallons in. 229 gallons into trench #1 168.5 gallons into trench #1 418.5 gallons absorbed in 24 hrs. 3rd way Trench #1 rose to 49.5" - recovered to 38.5" 226.6 gallosn absorbed Trench #2 rose to 45.8" - recovered to 30" 210 gallons absorbed 210 + 226 = 436 gallons absorbed (less gallons in 1" rise in tank) When seasonal ground saturation from runoff and water use in the occupied residence during test and recovery arecconsidered, system absorbed more than 450 gallons of water in 24 hrs and satisfys MOA requirements for a 3 BR home. Use in residence was reported as 11 toilet flushes and 38 minutes of shower. It should also be noted that the original permit was for a OR and the home is being sold as a 3BR. In addition, a partial blockage in the line from the shop is suspected. If a problem developes the line should be snaked and/or repaired.
