The drainfield is in a state of failure and needs to be upgraded. One testhole was excavated on the property and the drainfield is designed within its 30 foot radius. We are proposing to install a new 1250 gallon steel septic tank and deep trench type drainfield. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached 2017 logs which show the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. Attached is a sieve analysis for the soil that was perked. As can be seen on the attached sieve by DOWL, the soil classifies as a GP-GM. Based upon the GP-GM soil classification, the percent passing the #200 sieve (8.29%), and the percent passing the#4 sieve (49%). It is reasonable to believe that the interstitial space between the gravel particles is filled with enough sand/silt particles so as to negate the need for a sand filter. A recent water sample indicated no bacteria present and elevated nitrate levels of 7.8 mg/I. Based upon the location of nearby wells (see attached drawing) with elevated nitrate levels, it is reasonable to believe that the elevated nitrate levels for the subject lot are not direct result of the existing seepage pit. As can be seen on the attached drawing, several wells up-gradient of the proposed septic system have significantly higher nitrate levels. Based upon this fact, we believe that the septic systensup-gradient are a more likely the cause of the elevated nitrate levels in the general area. Based upon this information, we believe that a sand filter is not necessary and a deep trench type drainfield should be permitted for installation. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface water concerns. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached topography drawing, the average topography around the proposed drainfield is 15%. There are slopes greater than 25% in the vicinity of the drainfield; however, they are up gradient from the proposed drainfields.
