The soil was found to be ~4, and perked out at 324 sq. ft/bd, for Lot 15 and 290 sq. ft/bd, for Lot 16. The excavator, John Long, was concerned with these high perk rates, because the lots are small and it was going to be difficult to fit beth the house and septic system on either lot. So he dug test holes adjacent to the holes drilled by A~CS and thought that the soils looked better than what they were rated at. He cut through the drilled holes with his backhoe and discovered that the action of the rotating augers had smeared silt against the sides of the drill holes, this leading to an erroneously slow perk. He brought a sample of the soil in to show how good it was, and it was decided to re-perk the soil using a post hole digger in a backhoe-cut trench. The soil in beth test holes was the same - a ~ with tremendous amounts of gravel, although not clean enough to visually rate. The gravel is loosely held, mostly P-gravel and larger in size, and sloughs continually. Each perk test used about 15 gallons of water. On Lot ,~5_~the soil tested out at !22~. ft/bd, on .~_.~., it is %3~0 sq. ft/bd. The tests accompany this letter. Both tests were done within a number of feet of the original drilled holes, so that I felt an entire new log was not necessary, just a new test. The dimensions of the systems have been re-designed accordingly, as I have written next to the original permits, which I am also enclosing for your approval.
