We are proposing to install a grinder pump, a 1000 gallons septic tank and a deep trench type drainfield. One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows: 1. SOILS: See the attached logs which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the percolation test results. 2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications. 3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system. 4. TOPOGRAPHY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the area around the proposed drainfield is fairly flat. In short, there are no slope concerns. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA 99516 Per your request on May 12 we conducted adequacy tests of the water supply and wastewater disposal systems serving your residence on Lot 1, Block 1, Huffman S/D, located at 13800 Lake Otis Parkway. I will enclose the 3 bedroom Health Authority Approval (HAA) certificate and other relevant backup documents along with this letter after the HAA has been signed by the Municipality. We were unable to locate a driller's log for the well serving your residence, however other documents on file at the Municipal Health Department indicate that it was probably installed in 1967 and has a total depth of 86 feet. On the date of our test the static water level stood at 61 feet below the top of the casing. During the course of our test we pumped a total of 731 gallons of water from the well at the maximum pump output of 5.5 gpm, which caused the water level inside the casing to be drawn down to 77 feet, but no further. Based on our test data we determined that the total yield of the well is slightly greater than 5.5 gpm, which exceeds the Municipal criteria for approval of a single family residence, and also meets the FHA criteria that a well be able to supply 720 gallons of water within a 4 hour period. Water samples collected on May 12 were satisfactory, showing 0 coliform or other bacteria per 100 ml., and less than 0.1 mg/1 of nitrate -N. The well casing extension and new seal which you had installed now meet code. According to the as -built inspection reports on file at the Municipal Health Department, the wastewater disposal system consists of a 1000 gallon septic tank installed in 1967 followed by a 500 gallon tank installed in 1983. The effluent from these tanks flows into 5' wide x 56' long soil absorption drainfield containing 60" of sewer gravel, which was installed in 1983. To assess the adequacy of the system we ran a total of 724 gallons of water into the system over a two day period through the second cleanout of the second septic tank, while monitoring fluid levels in the septic tanks and in the soil absorption system standpipes, before, during and after the flow of water was stopped. The initial fluid depth in the northern trench monitor tube was 48", and the maximum depth achieved was 63". After the flow of water into the trench was stopped the fluid level receded at an adequate rate for -a 3 bedroom residence only. Since the system was originally designed and installed for a 4 bedroom residence, I understand you are in the process of converting the upstairs bedroom into an office so that the septic system certificate will match the # of bedrooms in the house. The depressions over the tank and drainfield have now been filled, per code. In conducting an adequacy test we attempt to provide a thorough, conscientious engineering analysis of the system. The reported results describe the performance of the system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and the separation distances are measured to readily identifiable features. Satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the system under different conditions, nor do they guarantee that there are no hidden defects or encroachments. Water was added to the crib through a 4" c.o. in 100 gallon increments, at an approxi- mate rate of 20 gpm, with a 2 minute lapse between successive inputs. When 300 gallons of water had been added, the water began to back up into the septic tank and the basement bath tub. Total rise in liquid level in the crib was 1 foot. Addition of water was halted and the septic tank was pumped. When the level in the crib dropped so that water was no longer flowing from the crib to the tank, absorption monitor- ing was carried out. The resultant plot of absorption vs. time, with the extrapolated absorption capacity, is attached. RESULTS: The system backed -up with the addition of 300 gallons of water, and the theoretical absorption capacity was 440 gpd. The required absorption capacity for a 4 -bedroom house is 600 gpd. The system fails to meet Municipality of Anchorage requirements. COMMENTS: Upgrading of the system will be necessary to comply with MOA requirements. Both the septic tank and soil absorption unit are undersized for a 4 -bedroom house.
