Box 196650 Anchorage, AK 99519-6650 RE: Denali View, Block 3, Lot 9 Septic System Upgrade To Whom It May Concern: Attached please find the application and supporting documentation for upgrading the septic system for the referenced 4 bedroom house. The original septic system, consisting of a 1000 gallon steel tank and a 20 ft by 54 ft bed drainfield with 6 inches effective depth, was installed in 1983. The drainfield is currently surcharged. It is proposed to install an advanced wastewater treatment system to serve this property. Two test holes were dug on February 6, 2003. The proposed design is based upon Test Hole #2, south of the existing drainfield. The test hole was dug to a total depth of 13 ft, encountering organics, silty sand, and gravel. A small seep of groundwater entered at 6.6 ft from the south side of the test hole. After monitoring groundwater for 1 week, the level was at 7.28 ft. Further groundwater monitoring found the test hole dry. Test hole #1 on February 6, 2003 had a seep of water at 6 ft from the east side of the hole. During groundwater monitoring, the level decreased to 9.78 ft in one week and was dry on March 4, 2003. The previous test hole on the property had a water level at 8 ft on June 2, 1983. The maximum proposed depth of the new system is 2.0 ft below original grade. The existing drainfield appears to encroach upon groundwater during seasonal high groundwater, and thus, it is proposed to be abandoned. The existing tank will also be abandoned in place. A percolation test was run from 2.5 to 3.0 ft and yielded an absorption rate of 2.3 minutes per inch. A Category III advanced wastewater treatment system is proposed to meet the needs of this property, specifically, the Advantex AX-20 operating in Mode lA, manufactured by Orenco Systems of Oregon. The application rate for this system is 8 gpd/ft2. Sewer Upgrade Permit Application for Denali View, Lot 9, BIk 3 Watkins Engineering, Inc.; March 19, 2003; page 2 The proposed design is as follows: 4 Bedrooms x 150 GPD/BR = 600 GPD Application rate = 6 gpd/ft2 600 GPD / 6 gpd/ft2 = 100 sq. ft required System Type: Shallow trench (5-wide) Maximum Depth: 2.0 ft Effective Depth: 0.5 ft Length Required: 100 sq. ft / 5 ft = 20 ft Proposed Length: 25 ft A reserve site with the same dimensions is available on the lot and is shown on the site plan. There are no surface waters or private wells within 100 ft of the proposed septic system. Surface waters were inspected during atypically warm weather in February 2003 when there was significant snow melting and runoff. Drainage was along the west side of the property. I am not aware of any adverse effect that this upgrade would have on any adjacent properties' water and wastewater treatment needs. Thank you for consideration of this permit application. WRIGHT BUILDING, PAI'MER 745-44t7 July 16, 1973 Mr. Rolf Strlckland Department of Environmental Quality Greater Anchorage Area Borough 3500 Tudor Road Anchorage, Alaska Ref: D.E.Q. Requirements Denall View Subdivision Dear Mr. Strlckland: In response to your department requlrements, transmitted herewith Is a solls report for Denall View Subdivision and proposed Subdivision layout with topo- graphic features. The data for the soils report is arranged as follows: Vicinity Map Test Hole Location Sketch Test Hole Logs GAAB Absorbtion Area Figure I Figure 2 Sheets I to 5 Table I The test holes were dug using a I/2 cubic yard Case rubber tlred backhoe (con- struction king 580). Discussion: The five (5) test holes were taken in the already cleared and stripped R.O.W. (see Figure 2). An estlmated 8" of organic peat had already been removed with the stripping operation. Four major types of soils were encountered during the digging: Layer I is black Organic peat frost susceptible,'~4,~6'i"fndepth' Layer II is brown silt frost susceptlble, F-4, 1.0 to 3~5 feet l'n depth. Layer III is greyish brown slit with fractured rock and occasional boulders, frost susceptible, 3.5 to 9.5 feet in depth. Layer iV is larger fractured rock and coarse sand with silt denslly compac"~d, N.F.S., located at bottom of hole. GORDON D. UNWIN, P.E. LEO SCHEBEN, JR., P.E. Mr. Rolf Strlckland Page 2 July 16, t973 In general the material is good for road constructlon if the molsture content is not increased passed its natural state. The fractured rock dispersed throughout the silt will make a solid road embankment. As for the seepage pits for the on site sewage dlsposal, the seepage pit will generally fall in Layer III and IV. This would requlre an absorbtlon area of between 205.5 to 237.5 square feet per bedroom and a N.F.S. gravel backfill around the pit. The pit size averaging 20' x 20' with a 9 foot tank depth. The wells and septic system have been laid out tn such manner as to put the well on the high side of the property and the septic system on the Iow side of the property. As for the availability of Potable water for each Iot~ the best .indication we have of potable water is R. Fredericks well as shown on our plat. This well is 135 feet deep and produces 20 g.p.m. This well Is very close to our subdiv- ision. The above is not necessarily exhaustive of the field data. The assessment of the condition of the well and septic applies only to the conditions as of the day tested. The flow and absorption rates may change due to subsurface conditions that may not be observed from the surface, changes in land use, local soil characteristics, groundwater levels that may fluctuate during the year, quality of construction (workmanship & materials), the water usage of the family being served by the system and maintenance. The operational life of all well and septic systems are subject to these various and dynamic characteristics and are outside the control of the evaluator of the well and septic system.
