Re:
Septic System Approval
Lot 2A, Block 2, Drake Subdv.
Dear Mr. Roth:
Attach is the permit application for upgrading a septic system on the above referenced lot.
Below is a narrative of probable impacts to adjacent properties.
Adjacent Wells - There are no existing wells within 100 feet of the proposed new septic
system. All adjacent wells have sanitary seals in place and have positive drainage away
from the well head.
Adjacent Wastewater System - The proposed bed absorption system will replace the
existing trench system. Testing of the existing system indicated it no longer accepted the
amount of the water it was designed to. The tank that is existing is adequate for the three
bedrooms at the residence but will need a additional liftstation added.
Reserved Space - Little space will remain on the lot to install a future system. A posible
future site is between the existing and the proposed fields.
Drainage - The lot is flat (3-6%). Positive drainage away for the field will be
maintained. No concentrated surface water will be directed toward the field and no
existing streams are within 100 feet of the proposed field.
The installation of this on-site system will have no probable impacts to adjacent well or septic
systems. The proposed system's separation distance radius will include parts of adjacent lots,
but will not interfere with the on-site systems on these lots.
Veery truly yours,
Me r'

Subsurface Investigation for Suitability of
On-Site Sewer, Lot 2, Block 2, Drake Subdivision
Gentlemen::
Transmitted herein in accordance with your instructions are
the results of the above referenced investigation as performed
by us on July 26, and 27, 1977. The scope of this
.project is investigation for suitability of an on-site
sewerage system.

Explanatory Information
Figure 1
Table A
Sheets 1-3
The exploration was conducted using a continuous flight.
solid stem auger. The rig is owned and operated by Denali
Drilling, Inc. Drilling was supervised, the test holes
logged and percolation test performed by Mr. James D. Mack,
Alaska Testlab supervisor.
The logs of the test holes are included as Table A of this
report. In interpreting the logs it would be helpful to
utilize the explanatory information contained in Sheets 1
to 3 of this report.
When drilling was completed a 3/4" slotted PVC pipe was
inserted in the hole to aid in determining the free water
level. For the percolation test, the test hole was filled
with water and left overnight to saturate. On returning the
next day, the hole was refilled with water and the drop in
the water level carefully monitored over the next 60 minutes.
This procedure is not a standardized percolation test,
however, we understand that the Municipality of Anchorage,
Department of Public Health and Environmental Protection
prefers tests performed in this manner to evaluate a site
for a proposed on-site sewerage system.
D&B Construction
August 3, 1977
Page 2
Using the above test, the observed minimum percolation rates
were as follows:
Test Hole~ 91 - 23.0 minutes/inch
Test Hole 92 - 2.7. m~nutes/inch
The absorptive capacity of sandy soils such as the layer at
the 7.0'-10.0' level in test hole 92 sometimes tends to
decrease with use, therefore, we recommend a percolation
rate of 5.0 minutes/inch be used for design purposes. No
water table was observed during drilling. It should be
noted though, that the free water level normally fluctuates
seasonally and with precipitation.
We hope this report meets your present needs. If we can be
of further service, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
ALASKA TESTLAB

Test Hole Lo~! - Description Guide
The soil des~riptioqs shown on the [ngs are the best estimate of the soil's
characteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testing procedure. If the log includes soils samples,
those samples receive an independent textural classification in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
.Depth Interval - usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant change in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, Fi, F2, F3, F4, see "Soil Classification
Chart"
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size and proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
proportions ;ire approximate and modifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes in properties are included.
Moisture C6ntent - this is a qualitative measure:
dry, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic lin{it,
wet, no free water, often soft, if cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out, ifa free draining soil;
~t at natural moisture content, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further definedby reference to PI,
LW, NP, M%or dilatency.)
Density - refers to more.or.less non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
and/or sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, medium
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
~silt groups. L~erived from drill action and/or sample data. Very
soft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-318", Shelby tube Y', auger flights (minute-man) 2", Auger flights
(B-50 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indisectly by
action of the drilling and are referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when reviewing the gradation sheets, if any,
the description on the hole log must be cbnsidered for an indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification -- This is a two letter code. See Unified
C-~sificati0n sheet"fo'r 'further definirion. In some cases AASHO and/or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterberg Limits .-- useful for fine grained and other plastic softs.
PI; natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
PI+; natural n'~oisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
'iT'mit s
L...._~; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
N...~P; non-plastic, useful as a modifying description of some silty
materials.
Dilatency - is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
saturated or nearly saturated soil sample when vibrated or jolted - used
as an aid to determine if a fine grained soil is a slightly or non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour - finely ground soil that is not plastic but otherwise appears
~ clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
iti'screte particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat. This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
us-~-~iqy occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorphus peat - organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Testhole -- includes last sam pie interval,
Frost Line - seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samp'T~es at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground - other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
Free Water Level - The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, used only in
special cases.
..Blow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, the standard penetration.
natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually trot
p-~'rformed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
S__P, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
..$., thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine graini:d soil,
.Cd., "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or wall of trench,
g, cut sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry Strength -- a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M=Medium, Il=High
- The samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
or and texture and are arbitrarily assigned a group letter. Further
disturbed tests including Atterberg Limits, grain size, moisture-density
relationship, etc. may be performed on the group and are assumed to
reflect the general distrubed characteristics of the soils assigned to the
group. This is an important phase of the soil analysis and is used to
standardize the various qualitative determinations and to reduce tire
number of quantitative tests necessary to describe the soil mass.

Ref: Septic Retest at Drake S/D, Lot 2A, Bk 2. Chemically Treated Drainfield.
A HAA was applied for on 3/21/00, however, it was denied based upon your departments
evaluation of the adequacy test data. The system was chemically treated (Old McDonald's
Pumping) and retested 30+ days latter on 5/1/00. It is our understanding that the house has been
occupied during the entire 30 day period.
Prior to the start of the test there was approximately 0.25 inches of liquid in one of the MTs.
Over a period of 90 minutes, 491 gallons was introduced into the bed, causing the 1/quid level to
rise a total of 4 inches (122 gallorrs per inch). The recovery was monitored 175 minutes later and
the level had dropped 0.5 inches, indicating that approximately 61 gallons had been absorbed.
This corresponds to an absorption rate of approximately 0.35 gallons per minute, or 502 gallons
per day.
Based upon this data it was determined that the absorption rate of the drainfield (when filled at
least to the 4 inch level) is greater than 450 gallons per day. Attached is a revised HAA check
sheet with the current septic test data.

Subject: HAA for Private Well & Septic System. Lot 2A, Bk 2, Drake S/D.
To whom it may concern:
The subject lot has a 3 b~droom house on it which is served by a private well and septic system.
The results of the field investigation and adequacy tests are summarized as follows:
WELL: The static water level on 3/10/00 was 32 feet below the top of the casing (BTC). Water
was pumped from the well at an average rate of 5.07 gpm for a total of 200 minutes (1013
gallons). Water level readings were erratic when the pump was running, indicating a level of 23
feet BTC. Since this is higher than the static level it is reasonable to assume that the readings
were being effected by spraying water from a leaking pipe joint, or the pitless adapter. There is
no well log on file, however, according to MOA records it is 65 feet deep (See MOA HAA
records dated 11/29/78 stating that the well driller left the State and "well log not required").
Wells in this area must be cased throughout the entire depth, consequently, it is reasonable to
assume that this well is cased to greater than 40 feet below grade. Please provide direction from
your department.
Based upon the flow data it was detemfined that the capacity of the well exceeds the Municipal
requirements for a 3 bedroom house (.31 gallons per minute).
SEPTIC SYSTEM ADEQUACY TEST: The existing mounded bed is 18 feet wide, 36 feet
long, and has an effective depth of 6 inches. Prior to starting the adequacy test, the east MT had
4.25 inches of liquid in it and the west MT had 4.875 inches of liquid in it. For this evaluation it
was assumed that the west monitoring tube most accurately represents the drainfield liquid level.
Consequently, the drainfield was 81% full prior to the start of the test.
Over a period of 67 minutes, 293 gallons was introduced into the bed. This raised the liquid level
from 4.875 inches to 7 inches (2.125 inch rise), which corresponds to 138 gallons per inch. The

theoretical drainrock pore space, per inch of liquid in the drainfield, assuming 33% porosity, is
135 gallons. This is very consistent with our field data.
The recovery was monitored for 308 minutes during which time the liquid level dropped 0.75
inches, indicating an absorption of 103.5 gallons (134 gallons per minute). This equates to an
absorption rate of approximately 490 gallons per day, which exceeds the MOA requirements for a
3 bedroom house (450 gallons per day). It is important to note that the system had to be filled to
100% of its capacity in order to achieve this absorption rate,
NOTE: The adequacy of a septic system is influenced by numerous factors, including, but not
limited to, seasonal surface water infiltration, groundwater variations, septic system
maintenance (frequency of septic tank pumping, usage of biological additives), condition of
drain pipe and pipe joints (which can be damaged by seismic activity and deteriorate with age),
type of substances deposited in septic system (cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, misc. objects),
and the amount of water being introduced on a continual basis. Consequently, the results of this
adequacy test are only valid for the specific day of the test. Furthermore, because of the limited
nature of this investigation, it is possible that there are hidden defects which may not have been
detected. No warrantee is made regarding the future performance of this well or septic system
CLOSING: If you liave any questions,
~,.Sincerely,
., M.S.
