Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519 Subject: Eagle Vista Block 1 Lot 1 Septic System Separation Waiver Request Ladies and Gentlemen: I am writing to request a separation distance waiver between a newly installed drain field and existing drain field of (10.3) feet. The existing drain field on this lot was installed on (09/16/1983) consisting of a deep trench with (85) feet of drain rock. A new absorption field was installed on (08/21/2023) (10.3') feet uphill from the existing trench. During excavation of the newly installed trench, soil was verified to be within six -feet of the existing trench & provided no signs of bio -mat material. It is known that bio -mat growth is typically concentrated within a two -to -three-foot perimeter outside of existing drain rock material within subsurface disposal systems, unless under certain circumstances. Due to the nature of existing soil strata these systems lie within, the hydraulic loading of these drain fields to create in excess—bio-mat growth on the perimeter of these drain fields; is unlikely to occur. Granting this waiver will not pose a threat to the safety of this lot or the surrounding lots, nor will granting this waiver affect the operational life of the new soil disposal system. The soils in this area are typically Hydrologic Soils Group A which contains organics underlain by silty sand and silty gravel (sm/gm), as shown on the soils log. Due to the nature of and drainage capacity of the soils found in the area (HSG A) the designed infiltration line of 46% for septic system installation on steep slopes should be used instead of the assumed/worst case soil classification infiltration line of 25%. The slopes and soil types enable installation of any system without the system effluent "daylighting" at any distance of concern. The proposed upgrade will serve an existing four-bedroom (4) house. This lot and surrounding lots are served by private wells. Currently there are no wells within 100 feet of the proposed installation. 1. Soils: A test hole was performed on this lot by S&S on 9/14/1983. Groundwater was not observed during the excavation of the test hole, and bedrock was not encountered. Based on the results of the percolation test and overall soils appearance an application rate of 0.80 gpd/SF was used for the design of a conventional wastewater treatment system in the area of the test hole. Pannone Engineering will perform a test hole at time of construction to confirm the soil profile and percolation rate used for this design. 2. Soil Absorption System Design. a. See Sheet 1 of the design package. 3. Surface Water: There is no surface water within 100 feet of the proposed septic tank and drain field. The proposed drain field design conforms to the steep slope provisions of AMC 15.65.210.B.4.a. Exception. The soils in this area are Hydrologic Soils Group A which contains organics underlain by a well graded to poorly graded gravel below, as shown on the soils log. Due to the nature of and drainage capacity of the soils found in the area (HSG A) the designed infiltration line of 46% for septic system installation on steep slopes should be used instead of the assumed/worst case soil classification infiltration line of 25%. The slopes and soil types enable installation of the proposed system without the system effluent daylighting at any distance of concern.
