We are submitting this design and permit application for the construction andlacement of a new 1,250 -gallon septic tank. The- p attached site plan identifies the location of the home and the existing well and septic system along with the new tank, location. No conflicts exist between this proposed tank and any other well or septic system, whether on this lot or adjacent lots. Wells on this and adjacent lots are shown. The new tank will be constructed near the same location as the existing tank and 87' from the existing well on the lot. A well to septic tank waiver request is attached. The proposed septic tank will also be 100' from all adjacent wells and surface water and more than 5' from the existing absorption bed. Please refer to the attached plan sheet for the septic design. The septic tank and well were originally constructed in 1983 and have been in constant operation since that time. The septic tank is now more than 35 years old and is at the end of its useful life and must be replaced. The new septic tank will be placed close to the location of the existing tank because insufficient fall if available from the house to the tank to allow gravity flow. A waiver is therefore required to allow the septic tank to be placed in its proposed location less than 100' from the well. The proposed septic tank will be constructed out of high density polyethylene with an unlimited useful life and will be located down slope from the existing well. Septic effluent that might surface from the tank would flow away from the well. The surface grade is 5% to 10% away from the well. Surface effluent contamination of the well is virtually impossible from the septic tank. Underlying soils on the lot are silty sand with gravel based on test holes completed in the past. No log is available for the well on the lot, but the well on the adjacent Lot 3, Block 2 is 81' deep and the static water level has been measured at 48' below the surface. We are assuming the well was drilled through silty sand and gravel material the fill depth. We are confident based on the use of the plastic septic tank and the aforementioned characteristics of the lot surface along with the well construction that the reduction in the protective radius of the well to 87' will not impact the quality of water from the water system. Dear Mr. Kenedy: Please find attached with this letter the soils log of the trench excavation on Lot 2, Block 2, Birch Tree Estate. During my inspection on March 27, 1983 morning, water was observed seeping into the trench at a depth of 7 feet, the interface of sandy 9ravel and fine sandy silt layers. The seepage water appears to have resulted from seasonal perched water, however, it could not be ascertained at this time. In order to circumvent the problem of groundwater, we recommend that the presently approved absorption trench type design be changed to either a drainfield or a seepage bed type design with the bottom of the trench located at a depth of 3 feet. This would require a fill of about 12-inches over the drainfield or seepage bed area to obtain a minimum frost cover of 3 feet over the top of the 9ravel backfill around the distribution pipes. The absorption rate recommended is 150 square feet per bedroom which is the same as the value used in the currently approved design by MOA. Attached with this letter is Figure 1 which show a possible layout for the drainfield option. Both the alternative designs described above to the absorption trench system would require the presently in-place septic tank to be raised by about 18 inches so that the invert of the septic tank outlet will be placed at 30 inches below the groundsurface. This would allow a minimum of 6 inches of gravel backfill required to be placed below the distribution pipes which are to be installed in 3-foot deep trenches. This investigation was performed in accordance with your request of May 10, 1976 and those procedures outlined in a letter dated July 15, 1975, by Mr. Roll Strickland of the Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Environmental Quality. A single test hole was put down within the Lot 2 area for the purpose of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system. Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted auger type drilling rig and the~test hole was extended to a total depth of 19.0 feet below ground surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01. Ground water was not encountered in the test hole. We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you.
