Attn: Greg 3ohnson 7#1 Sesame Street Anchorage, AK 99503 Re: Soil Investigation for Lots I through 5, Birch Woods Subdivision Dear Mr. 3ohnson: On June 7, 1983 S&S Engineers Inc. conducted an investigation on the subject property for the purpose of classifying soil types, recording ground water levels and determining foundation criteria. The property is located directly south of the .intersection of .New Birchwood Loop Road and Old Birchwood Loop. Road. All five lots suPport-'a mixed stand of birch and white spruce. A small stream runs northwest across the sOuthwest corner of the property. Five test holes were drilled on Lots l-through 5 by Alaska Geotechnical Drilling Services Inc. The test holes were terminated at various depths, and the locations are shown on the attached soil log location diagrams. The holes were drilled with a CME 55 drill mounted on a FN 60 Nodwell) using 8" O.D. hollow stem auger. Samples were obtained with a 1.#" I.D. split-spoon sampler diven with a l#0-pound drop hammer) having a 30" free fall. The sampler is driven below the auger bit and the penetration resistance~ as measured by the blow counts per foot, gives an indication of relative density of the in- place natural soil. Samples Were taken at various depths and were classified in the field by an Engineering Geologist. Please see the attached soil logs for further detail. One test hole was drilled on each lot in order to determine the soil types~ relative density and to install observation wells for future water level readings. The locations of the drilled test holes were based on information obtained from a previous soil investigation~ consisting of eleven test pits dug with a backhoe. The investigation was performed by S&S Engineers Inc. during April 1'983. The five test holes were drilled in areas most suitable for on-site sanitary sewer systems. TH's 1, 2, 3 and ~ have similar profiles. In summary, gravel with some sand, tace silt and scattered to numerous cobb~were found overlying silty sand. The depth of gravel varied from 8.5' in TH-2 to I/3.5' 1~ TH-#. No sand was encountered in TH-O. The profile for TH-5 was brown silliy sqtnd from 0.0' to 7t5' over gray, silty sand with some gravel. The Unified Classification Varies from (~W-{IP to SM .These soils are adequate WAS I LLA AN OH ORAG E SOLDOTN A (907) 376-3770 (flO7) 349-6561 '< (907) 262-9534 Birchwood Subdivision Page 2 Free water was found in all ol the test holes. Two-inch ABS pipe was installed in each hole after drilling for Iuture monitoring. On July 13, 1983 and on August 16, 1983, the test hole sites were inspected for changes in surface runoff and the observation wells were monitored. Two of the observation wells were not read on July 13. Both missing wells were recovered by excavation on August 16, I983. The observed water levels are shown below. The monitoring program and the two previous geological studies show that the water levels I~ave remained reasonably consistent. In general~ the water levels are such that they may preclude trench systems, but bed systems can be utilized. ,, 5// %0. %0, l~ / t0.0' / / / 9.0' j 9.0' ~ 1~ l/ %0' / / / noreading/ None * J ~ ~ ~0.0, // / ~o~ / No~* / / The maximum allowable soil bearing capacity (Qa) which can be utilized for foundation bearing design is 2000 psf.
