RE: Test Hole and Soil Log Report for Sanitary System
Lot 19 Fairmount Subdivision
Dear Mr. Sellens:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments regarding
soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This investigation was per-
formed in accordance with your request of July 10, 1975, and those procedures
outlined in a letter dated December 19, 1974 by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the
Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the Lot 19 area for the purpose of
defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary system.
Excavation was accomplished with an auger type drilling rig and the test hole
was extended to a total depth of 17.0 feet below ground surface. The final
lob prepared for the test hole has been included in Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the test hole.
We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you. Should
you have any questions with regard to the above, please do not hesitate to
contact us.
Very truly yours,

Reft Health Authority Approval (HAA) Application for Lot lg,
Fairmont Subdivision.
To whom it may concern:
1. NELL ADEQUACY TEST: Attached is the HAA application for
the subSect lot. An adequacy test was run on the weii by
pumping 1.76 GPM (average flow rate) for a total of 255
minutes. The total volume pumped was 450 gallons. The
static water level, at the beginning of the test. was 25
feet from the top of the weii casing. The drawdown on the
well, at the end of the adequacy test, was 79 feet from top
of well casing. Thirty minutes later, the well recovered to
69_~_~et. Three hours later the well had recovered to 54
e~-~et, and was still recovering at a rate of one inch per
minute. During the recovery period, the homeowners utilized
some unknown quantity of water. Consequently, the
previously mentioned data is conservative, and the well is
capable of producing 450 GPD.
2. NELL LOG: No well log exists for the subSect lot.
was able to confirm there was no water entering the well
from above the assumed bedrock elevation (-60.0 feet). This
was determined by drawing the well down and listening for
incoming water. In short, it does not appear to be
perforated within the first 40 feet of casing.
5. SEPTIC SYSTEM ADEQUACY TEST: The septic system was
tested for adequacy by introducing water into the sump
located at the end of the trench. The sump could not be
used as monitoring tube since it appeared to be constructed
from non-perforated pipe. Nater was introduced into the
sump at a rate of 1.76 gpm for a total of 255 minutes (450
gallons). Nithin the previous 24 hours the homeowners had
introduced an estimated 500 gallons into the system.
Consequently, within the 24 hour period, 750 gallons had
been introduced into the trench. The system absorbed the
entire volume without backing into the septic tank.
Consequently, the system was deemed to be adequate for a
three bedroom home (450 gpd).
Telephone - Fax 338-3246 · 8471 Brookridge Drive · Anchorage, Alaska 99504
4. FOUNDATION CLEAN-OUT: I was unable to find a foundation
clean-out. The initial inspection report, dated 6/25/76,
did not show a foundation clean-out either.
5. SEPTIC TANK 85 FEET FROM WELL: The well is located only
85 feet from the septic tank. A waiver of this separation
distance was approved by DNHS on April 2, 1992.
If you have any questions, feel free to caii me at ~57-6179.
If all goes well please send the HAA directly to the
homeowner. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Garness:
Your request for waiver of the required 100 foot horizontal
separation of a septic system to a private well has been approved°
The approved separation distance is 85 feet from the well to the

MAR 6 1992
kef: Request for Waiver of Separation Distance, Well to
Septic Tank, Lot 19, Fairmont Subdivision.
To whom it may concern:
On February 26, 1992, while performing engineering services
for a Health Authority Approval (HAA) on the subject lot, I
noted that the septic tank was located only 85 feet from the
well. According to the initial inspection report, dated
6/23/76, the septic tank was located 100+ feet from the
well; however, it had yet to be drilled. Somehow the well
was drilled after the inspection, and was installed at a
location other than originally proposed to the inspector.
Regardless, currently the well is only 85 feet from the well
and a separation waiver will be necessary for my client to
obtain an HAA.
The following is an item by item evaluation of the criteria
outlined in the "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines for
SCRO", prepared by the Alaska Department of Environmental
Conservation (ADEC), January 3, 1985. As per the
instructions of this guideline, since the well penetrated
bedrock (assumed based upon depth of well on lot 19, and
geological profile from well on lot 20), I will only
consider the separation distance from the bottom of the
septic tank to bedrock rather than the separation distance
to the water table, which in this case is a confined aquifer
accessed through fissures in the bedrock.
i . GEOLOGICAL:
a. Due to the fact that there are no well logs available
for most of the adjacent lots, it is impossible to develop a
bedrock profile for this particular area. There are no well
logs for lots 7,8,9,10,17,18, & 19, Fairmont Subdivision.
There is a well log for lot 20, Fairmont Subdivision. This
well is located approximately 85 feet away from my clients
well on lot 19, and is only about 5 feet higher in
Telephone - Fax 338-3246 · 8471 Brookridge Drive · Anchorage, Alaska 99504
elevation. Since it is the only geological information I
have, and it is so close to the well on lot 19, I Nil!
assume the well on lot 19 has a similar geological profile.
The well log for lot 20 (attached) indicates that bedrock
(sedimentary) was encountered at 65 feet, and a confined
aquifer was encountered in fissured, porous rock at t64-J67
feet. Drilling was discontinued at 180 feet, still in
bedrock. The confined aquifer rose to a static water level
of 55 feet in the well. During my site visit, I lowered the
probe of my well sounder into my client's well and appeared
to hit bottom (or some other obstruction) at around 98 feet.
I believe the pump is set at around 95 feet since I was
unable to draw the well down below that level during the
adequacy test. The static water level in my client's Net]
was measured at 25 feet. Consequently, it is clear that the
two wells "found" access to the confined aquifer at
different, elevations. It is apparent that neither well is
supplied directly by water from above the bedrock. My field
investigation on 5/t/92 confirmed that there was no water
was entering the well from above the assumed bedrock
elevation (-60.0 feet)_ This was determined by drawing the
well down and listening for incoming water.
b. The depth from the bottom of the septic tank to bedrock
is estimated to be 43 feet (see the attached drawing). This
separation distance corresponds to a point value of 5.0.
The soil sorbtion below the septic tank (assuming 16 feet of
sand with small amounts of clay and 27 feet of clean gravel)
is estimated to be .93. The water table gradient is not
applicable since the well is supplied from a confined
aquifer and does not induce a hydraulic gradient from the
septic tank to the well. The point value for this is
unclear (Ii assume it would be 7.0). The horizontal
separation distance is 85 feet, which corresponds to a point
vatue of 2.4.
2. SPECIAL_ CONSIDERATIONS:
or construction techniques
concerns.
There are no special materials
used to mitigate geological
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
a. Only JS~ of the separation distance needs to be waived.
b. There is over lO,O00 ft2 of property per bedroom.
c. There are no aspects about the lot shape or structure
which would have an impact on the decision to grant, or not
grant the subject waiver.
d. The well is privately used by a family of four.
In addition to the above, it is important to note that the
well was tested for bacteria and nitrates on February 22,
1992. It tested "non-detected" for both nitrates and
bacteria. In short, it appears that the septic system
not contaminating the well on lot 19. The well on lot 18 is
located 170 feet from the septic tank and should not be
concern. The well on lot 20 is over tOO feet from the
septic tank and is "tapped" into a confined aquifer 150 feet
below the ground surface. The next closest well is located
on lot lO, which is on the north side of Rabbit Creek Road,
and is several hundred feet from the subject septic tank.
If you have any questions please contact me at 537-6179.
Sincerely,
~G/jag

Dear Mr. Reed:
A well flow test was conducted at Fairmont Subdivision Lot 19 Block 0,
March 29, 1983.
Initial static water level was at 25 feet. The well pumped 8 gallons
per minute for 20 minutes. It then fell off to 3 gallons per minute end
slowly continued to decline untill it stopped after 44 minutes. In that
time it had produced 261 gallons.
The well was allowed to recover for 2 hours and 15 minutes.. At this
time the static level was at 31 feet.
The well was started again and drawn down to 94 feet its lower level.
It produced 138 gallons in 19 minutes. The last 5 minutes at 94 feet
the flow rate was 2 gallons per minute. The test was stopped and the
well recovery observed. After 58 minutes static level was at 48 feet.

Thus after 2 hours recovery there are 105 gals in storage.
Well was again pumped down to between 91 to 93 feet and left to run at
preset 1 1/2 gpm. For 15 minutes at this flow rate. This 3rd test used
90 gallons o~ water. Test started at 1150 and terminated at '1620. In 4
1/2 hours well had produced (261 + 138 + 90) or a total of 489 gallons.
The well should produce sufficient water for a three bedroom house if
water management is practiced; The 1,440 gal per day is more than
adequate.

Fete Sapala
