The reported results described the performance of the system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of all wells and septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system. These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that there are no hidden defects or encroachments. GEG, LTD. can therefore not provide any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the operational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSD. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA 99516 By means of this letter we are requesting issuance of a separation distance waiver allowing the existing well on Lot 2, Block 1, Fireweed Hill S/D to be approved in its present location which is approximately 75 feet from the closest part of a seepage pit on Lot 2 and 85 feet from the seepage pit on Lot 1. The waiver should also allow the seepage pit on Lot 2 to be within 92 feet of the private well on Lot 1. in addition to the narrative contained in this letter, a site plan depicting the relative locations of wells and septic systems is enclosed, along with a well log for Lot 6, recent water sample test results, and copies of septic system inspection reports. Due to the fact that these facilities were constructed in the early 1970's we were unable to locate driller's logs for the wells on Lots 2 and 1; however the enclosed log for a well drilled in 1984 to serve the residence on Lot 6 should also be descriptive of the wells serving Lots 2 and 1. Based on the as -built inspection reports for the septic systems, the well serving Lot 2 was probably drilled in late 1971, shortly after the septic system was installed, and the well on Lot 1 in the summer of 1973. The applicable separation distance criteria at that time were 50 feet from a private well to a septic tank and 100 feet to a soil absorption system. The actual distance from the Lot 2 well to the septic tank cleanout is 63 feet and the Lot 1 well is further away; this means that no waiver is required for the septic tank. The seepage pit cleanout, however, is 89 feet from the Lot 2 well, and by plotting a probable configuration of the underground layout of the seepage pit, it appears that the closest part of the seepage pit may be as close as 75 feet from the Lot 2 well and 92 feet from the Lot 1 well; thus a waiver is required for the seepage pit. The wastewater disposal facilities serving Lot 1 (immediately to the north) were also constructed prior to the 1973 changes to the separation distance requirements. The location of the Lot 1 septic tank also does not require a waiver, however a standpipe which appears to access the seepage pit is 92 feet from the Lot 2 well. The requested waiver should address the fact that the seepage pit on Lot 1 may be as close as 85 feet from the Lot 2 well. On June 18, 1996 we conducted a yield test of the well on Lot 2. The initial static water level stood at 137 feet below the top of the casing which corresponds closely with a static water level of 133 feet which we measured in the well serving Lot 6 in October of 1995. This indicates that both wells are probably drawing from the same aquifer, and that the subsurface strata above the water table are similar. During the course of the yield test we pumped a total of 722 gallons of water from the well at the maximum pump output of 7.1 gpm which caused the water level inside the casing to be drawn down to 145 feet, but no further. Based on this test, we determined that the total yield of the well is in excess of 7.1 gpm. Water samples collected from the Lot 2 residence on June 13, 1996 were satisfactory, showing 0 coliform or other bacteria per 100 ml. and non-detectable nitrates. These results indicate that the wells are not being polluted as a result of the proximity of either seepage pit. According to the as -built inspection report the wastewater disposal system serving Lot 2 was installed in October of 1971 and consists of a 1000 gallon, single compartment, concrete septic tank followed by a six foot deep concrete ring seepage pit with 78 feet of sidewall perimeter. The soil was rated at 241 square feet per bedroom which indicates that it has a fairly high silt content. This would tend to result in a slow infiltration rate and cause the septic tank effluent to be cleansed within a short distance. On June 18, 1996 we conducted an adequacy test of the wastewater disposal system. The initial fluid depth in the seepage pit was 52 inches, and the addition of 637 gallons of water into the system caused the fluid level in the pit to rise another 14 inches. After the flow of water into the seepage pit was stopped, the fluid level in the seepage pit receded one inch within less than one hour. Based on the measured reabsorption rate we concluded that the seepage pit is still capable of accepting water at an adequate rate for a two bedroom residence. Based on information shown on the Lot 6 well log and the inspection reports, the following is a breakdown of how waiver analysis points could be assigned using D.E.C.'s 1985 "Separation Distance Waiver Guidelines for SCRO". Category Points Distance to water table: (137' - 2' -8' -5' = 122') 7.11 Soil sorption (13' @ 1.5 + 109' @4.5)/122 4.18 Permeability (13'@ 1.5 + 109'@3)/122 2.84 Water table gradient (assume level) 2.9 Horizontal separation 75') 2.0 Total 19.03 Using this assignment of points, it appears that a waiver can be safely granted without concern as to contamination of the wells on either Lot 2 or Lot 1 by effluent originating either in the seepage pit on Lot 2 or in the seepage pit on Lot 1. The fact that both seepage pits have been in operation for approximately 25 years with no bacterial contamination or even any detectable nitrates is further evidence that the aquifer is well protected. Based on the Lot 6 well log showing the aquifer depth to be 183 feet, the measured static water level of 137 feet indicates that the aquifer is confined, and thus could not be contaminated by pollution percolating down from above. It can be concluded from this test that the waste water disposal system serving the two bedroom home located on this property is currently functioning adequately.
