Ref: Proposed Septic Upgrade for Allen; Lot 1,
To whom it may concern:
The existing 3 bedroom house is served by a private well and septic system. The septic system is in a state
of failure and needs to be upgraded. We are proposing to install a 1000 gallon septic tank and a deep
trench type drainfield. One test hole was excavated on the property. The drainfield will be designed
around the 30 foot radius of this test hole. Comments regarding the design are summarized as follows:
I. SOILS: See the attached log which shows the soil classifications, groundwater monitoring, and the
percolation test results.
Ifyou have a~,]q~
2. DRAINFIELD DESIGN: See attached design drawing for drainfield specifications.
3. SURFACE WATERS: There are no surface waters within 100 feet of the proposed septic system.
4. TOPOGRAPIIY: As can be seen on the attached design drawing the average topography below the
drainfield is a 10-15 percent slope running approximately south to north.
We are unaware of any adverse impacts this installation would have on adjacent wells or septic systems.
.tions, please contact us at 337-6179. Thank you for your assistance.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation for Lots 1, 2, 3 & 4
Allen Subdivision
Dear Mr. Allen:
Our previous report, dated October 12, 1977 only ran percola-
tion tests on Lots 1 and 4, it therefore being necessary to
do additional work on Lots 2 and 3. We performed the addi-
tional subsurface investigation work on July 19, 1978 per
the request of Mr. Archer.
Based on the exploration done in October 1977, and this more
recent exploration of July 19, 1978, we make the following
su,u~ary for the desiqn percolation rates on the four lots:
Lot 1, 5.0 minutes/inch
Lot 2, 8.0 minutes/inch
Lot 3, 10.0 minutes/inch'
Lot 4, 5.0 minutes/inch
In this second phase exploration, three test holes were
placed one each on lots 1, 2, and 3. Though Lot I had been
done previously, the percolation rate shown was unrealistically
high for the type of soils encountered, and we felt that
justified a retest.
Sixteen to 18.0' deep test holes were placed on each lot
using a drill rig owned and operated by Denali Drilling,
Inc. The drilling was supervised and the test holes logged
by Mr. Terry L. Barber, staff geologist with Alaska Testlab.
The enclosed Table A is the log of those three test holes.
After each test hole was drilled it was cased with a slotted,
3/4" PVC pipe, filled with water and allowed to stand over
night. On returning the next day, the hole was again filled
and the rate at which the water percolat, ed out of the hole
measured at 10 minute intervals for at least 60 minutes.
The location of the test ho].es are shown on the attached
Figure 1.
Mr. George Allen

It should also be noted that we have enclosed a copy of the
original report done in Octobor as Appendix A of this report.

Addendum
It should be noted that.the test holes drilled were a
minimum of six inches in diameter and that the percola-
tion tests were run in the test hole, not the pipe. The
pipe was placed only to help keep the hole open.
Also, the percolation rates listed above are for the soil
layers lis'ted below:
Lot Perc Rate Applicable Layer
1 5.0 7' - 18'
2 8.0 5' - 16'
3 10.0 5' - 16'

Test Hole Lo~l - Description Guide
The mil descriptions shown on the logs are the best estimate of the soil's
e. hatacteristics at the time of field examination and as such do not achieve the
precision of a laboratory testin$ procedure. If the log includes soils samples,
thole samples receive an independent textural classit~carion in the laboratory
to verify the field examination.
The logs often include the following items:
Depth Interval - usually shown to 0.1 foot, within that zone no
significant change in soil type was observed through drill action, direct
observation or sampling.
Frost Classification - NFS, Fl, F2, F3, F4, lee "Soil Classification
Chart".
Texture of Soil - An engineering classification of the soils by particle
size ~nd proportion, see "Soil Classification Chart", note the
pi'olxntions are approximate and ~udifications to the soil group due to
stratification, inclusions and changes m properties are included.
Moisture Content .-- this is a qualitative measure:
dry, no or little apparent surface moisture,
damp, moisture forms portion of color, less than plastic limit,
wet, no free water, often soft, it' cohesive soil,
saturated, free water may be squeezed out. ifa free draining soil;
dilatcnt at natural moisture content, if a non-plastic silt or fine
sand. (The moisture content is further defined by reference to PI,
LW, NP, M%or dilatency.}
Density - refers to more-or-less non-cohesive soils, such as sand gravel
mixtures with or without a fine fraction, derived from drilling action
andJor sample data; usually described as: very loose, loose, mediu~
dense, very dense. General intent is to portray earthwork
characteristics.
Stiffness - refers to more-or-less cohesive soils and fine grained silts of
~silt groups. Derived from drill action and]or sample data. Very
~oft, soft, stiff, very stiff and hard are commonly used terms.
Particle size - The largest particle recovered by the split spoon is
1-3/8", Shelby tube 3", auger flights (minute-man} 2", Auger flights
(B-S0 hollow stem) 6"-8". Larger particles are described indirectly by
action of the drLlling and arc referred to as cobbles, 3" to 8", or
boulders 8"+. Therefore when reviewing the gradation sheets, if any,
the description o, the hole log must be considered for an'indication of
larger particles.
Unified Soil Classification - This is a two letter code. See Unified
Classification sheet fur further definition. In some cases AASHO and]or
FAA soil classifications may be shown as well as the unified.
Atterbetg Limits - useful for fine grained and other plastic soils.
PI: natural moisture content believed to be less than plastic limit
Pt+; natusal moisture content believed to be between plastic and liquid
~-mits
L__~; natural moisture content believed to be greater than liquid limit
· NP; non-plastic, useful as a modifying descrip:ion of some silty
~t~rlais.
Dilatency - is the ability of water to migrate to the surface of a
saturated ot nearly saturated sod sample when vibrated ot jolted ~ used
as an aid to determine if a fine grained soil is a slightly ur non-plastic
silt or a volcanic ash.
Rock flour - finely ground soil that L~ not plastic but otherwise appears
~ clayey silt.
Organic Content - usually described as Peat, PT, sometimes includes
discrete particles such as wood, coal, etc. as a modifier to an inorganic
soil. Quantity described as; trace, or an estimate of volume, or, in case
of all organic, - as Peat, This may include tundra, muskeg and bog
material.
Muck - a modifier used to describe very soft, semi-organic deposits
~y occuring below a peat deposit.
Amorpbus peat - organic particles nearly or fully disintegrated.
Fibrous Peat - organic particles more-or-less intact.
Bottom of Tcsthole - includes last sample int. er~al.
Frost Line - seasonal frost depth as described by drilling action and/or
samples at the time of drilling.
Frozen Ground -- other than frost line, described by samples, usually
includes description of ice content, often will include modified Unified
Classification for frozen soils - this is a special case related to
permafrost studies.
'Free Water Level -- The free water level noted during drilling. This is
not necessarily the static water table at the time of drilling or at other
seasons. Static water table determination in other than very permeable
soils requires observation wells or piezometer installations, used only in
special cases.
Blow/6" - The number of blows of a 140 weight free falling 30" to
advance a 2" split spoon 6"; the number of blows for a 12" advance is,
by definition, thc standard penetration.
natural moisture content of the soil sample, usually not
pe'~r ormed on clean sands or gravels below the water table.
Type of Sample -
5P, refers to 2" split spoon driven into the soil by 140 pound
weight, a disturbed sample,
S, thin wall tube, "Shelby" used to obtain undisturbed samples
of fine grained soil,
G, "grab" disturbed sample from auger flights or wall of trench,
C, cut sample, undisturbed sample from wall of trench.
Dry Strength - a useful indicator of a soil's clayey fraction, N=None,
L=Low, M =Medium, H=High
-- The samples are placed into apparently similar groups based
or and texture and are arbitrarily assigned a group ',etter. Funhet'~
disturbed tests including At~erbcrg Limits, grain size, moisture-density
relationship, crc, may be performed on the group and are assumed to
reflect the general distrubed characteristics of the soils assigned to the
group. This ~s an important phase of the soil analysis and is used to
standardize the var,ous qualitative determinations and to reduce the
number of qua.ntltative tests necessary to describe the ~oil mass.

Engineer's Comments:
In conducting this evaluation, GEG, LtD. attempted to provide a thorough,
conscientious engineering analysis of the system in accordance with ADEC and MOA
DSD Guidelines & Regulations. The reported results described the performance of the
system under the conditions encountered at the time of the test, and separation
distances measured to readily identifiable features. The operational life of afl wells and
septic systems depend on the local soils condition, groundwater levels that may
fluctuate during the year, and the water usage of the family being served by the system.
These conditions are outside the control of the evaluator of the system. Satisfactory test
results do not guarantee future performance of the system, nor do they guarantee that
there are no hidden defects or encroachments. GEG, LTD. can therefore not provide
any warranty or future estimate of how long the system will continue to meet the
OPerational requirements of the ADEC or MOA DSD. The content of this rePort is for
the sole benefit of the owner listed above. Any reliance upon or use of this report by any
other person or party is not authorized, nor will it confer any legal ri.qht whatsoever.
