SUBJECT:
Seepage pit requirements,
proposed 2-bedroom house, Lots 17 & 18, Block 4
Alpine Village Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska
Dear Mr. Jenssen:
In accordance with your request, we have made a soils log to
determine the size requirements for a seepage pit to be located
about 40 feet west of your proposed house at the above location.
Our soils technician, Mr. John Weitz, logged the soils on July
19, 1972, as follows:
Depth Description
0 to 1'
1 to 2-1/2'
2-1/2 to 4'
4 to 12'
Peat
Brown sandy gravelly silt
Blue to grey fine sandy silt
Tan sandy gravelly silt
Ail soils were classified in accordance with the attached Soils
Triangle. A value of 250 sq. ft. of wall area per bedroom has
been assigned to the soils as a reasonable value because the silt
content is estimated at 40 to 50 percent.
By the Soils Triangle, 40 percent or more silt renders a soil to
be classified a silt; however, by the Unified system, the material
is SM. The sand-gravel components increase soil permeability to
provide a higher seepage capability than with a silt (300 sq. ft.
of wall area per bedroom). The water table was not encountered
in the backhoe excavation at the time of exploration.
Using an effective interval of 2 to 8 feet (2' cover, 4' above
water table), a house with two bedrooms would require 84 feet of
pit perimeter (21'x21' , for example) while a one-bedroom house
would require 42 perimeter feet (10-1/2'x10-1/2') .
Very truly yours,
Staff Engineer
