Street Anchorage, Alaska 99502 Attn: John Kennedy Subject: Lot 7, Block 1, Atelier Subdivision The above referenced lot has upgraded its sewage disposal system to accommodate the addition of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms to their existing one bedroom house. The existing sewer system was designed for three bedrooms and installed on July 11, 1978. The upgraded absorption area was designed for 3 bedrooms, is completely separate from the existing system, and services only the 2 bathrooms of the addition to the house. This was done because the addition is lower than the existing system. Part of the new absorption system was installed in GM type soil that was not rated with a percolation test (See transpondence from this office by Alan Wien, 9/26/85). Because it was not rated, the MOA has given credit for only a 2 bedroom installation. An attempt was made to rate the soil at 10 feet with a hole drilled by a hand-portable drill rig on 10/17/85. This was not possible because of loose soil sloughing back in the hole. Easy access with a backhoe is no longer possible to the site because of construction of the addition. Our office conducted an adequacy test on the old and new septic systems on 11/4/85. The old trench was found to be adequate for 1 bedroom. It was determined it can accept 225 gallons per day. The new trench was tested by adding 1205 gallons in the end standpipe, which only raised the liquid level to 0.40 feet. The next day (22 hours later), the standpipe was checked and found to be dry. Therefore, one can conclude it is adequate for 8 bedrooms based on MOA guidelines. Obviously, the unrated soil (which ~s in the bottom of the trench) has an acceptable percolation rate. Therefore, we recommend Health Authority Approval for this house at four bedrooms. The old system is adequate for one-bedroom. The new system is adequate for the three bedroom addition. The existing sewer system, installed on July 11, 1978, consists of a 1250 gallon steel septic tank and a trench measuring 42 feet in length. This touch contains 6 feet of gravel, giving it a total absorption area of 504 sq. feet. The soils rating of this trench is 150 sq. ft./bedroom making it adequate for 3 bedrooms. The upgraded absorption area is completely separate from the existing system and services only the 2 bathrooms of the addition to the house. This was done, because the house addition is lower than the existing system. From our inspection on June 26, 1985, the upgrade system has a 1250 gallon septic tank and 2 absorption lines measuring 55 feet and 15 feet for a total of 70 feet. The total depth of the trench is 12 feet with 8 feet of gravel. The dimensions of the trench differ from the permit (#850359) due to the contour of the lot and the only suitable area for the trench to be located. The permit calls or 10 feet total depth. The true total depth is 12 feet to allow for the shorter length. The soils rating for this trench is~ ft./bedroom from 4 - 10 feet. Total effective absorptlon~area is I120 sq. ft.. Both of these sewer systems combined equal adequate area~for 6 bed~~, while the house contains only 4 bedrooms. The existing trench services 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen, and laundry facilities. The upgrade trench services only 2 bathrooms. We therefore request that you authorize the additional 2 feet depth of the upgrade trench, allowing credit for all 8 feet of gravel, making it adequate for the 3 bedroom upgrade.
